So I have had a tender spot on my shin for awhile now. I never really experienced "shin splints" just one specific tender spot. So I decided to finally give in a mention it to my doctor before I start marathon training in July (a the risk of being a complete moron). She x-rayed and saw nothing and then ordered a bone scan. I just left the bone scan...I know techs aren't doctors but I can't help myself from asking their thoughts. She in not so many words said it looks like I might have stress fractures in BOTH legs...
If this is true, what's the worst case scenario and best? I've been running in minamalist shoes (NB minamilist and LOVE them- should I try Newton for more impact protection?)...:::sigh:::I want to cry.
All of this piled on top of the fact that I can JUST NOW hang with the "fast group" in my running club. It really doesn't hurt to run, just sore to the touch after.
Sorry for the long post, but you ladies are always so wise- what say ye H&F? TIA!

Re: Stress Fractures...give it to me straight...
Yeah, try not to work yourself up too much about what the techs said. Wait to hear from your doctor and decide what's next from there.
I know, easier said than done. I had an MRI on Friday to see if I've got a stress fracture in my shin, and I don't see my doctor until 5/2. I purposely refrained from asking anything at the MRI though because what good would it do to get a non-medical opinion?
I'm dealing with a stress fracture in my right shin right now. No running for me for now and he said whenever I am completely pain free for 2 weeks I go back and he checks it out and then can hopefully start back slowly. Mine, luckily, wasn't too bad so I wasn't told the typical 8 weeks off. He did have me get blood tests for vitamin d deficiency for possible supplements if I am low.
Worst case...no running for awhile. Best case....no running BUT you don't make it worse by still running on it. Plan on low impact cardio for awhile and use this time to do more weight training! It sucks to not be able to run and not knowing when you will be able to again. But also on the positive side...I've saved a decent amount of money from all the races I've missed or will be missing because of this!
Hope this helps!
5/2? Goodness, you have WAY more patience than me! Luckily I get mine tomorrow, Thursday at the latest. I guess I should probably start considering a non-minimalist shoe in the mean time.
how long is awhile? if you've had pain for a month or longer the fracture should be visible on a an x-ray by now.
I had a very, very similar experience last winter. had a tender spot on my shin, it didn't hurt when I ran, just felt kind of achy after. no shin splints proceeding. no crescendo pain. finally, decided to go to the sports med MD not because I was in pain, but because it had been tender for SO LONG.
MD was fairly certain it was a stress fx on exam. no fracture/callus visible on x-ray. so she sent me for an MRI. nothing but healthy bone. granted it took a week off before I had an answer, but the answer was NOT a stress fracture.
just wanted to give you a little hope!
ebeth- thank you so much for this- I'm hoping to know something shortly, but this is really what I am thinking. It's been MONTHS that it has been tender. Not really hurting when I run right now, just tender to the touch. I did not have shin splits before either...nor crescendo pain.
Fingers crossed!
