Is there too much sugar in the flavored Greek yogurts?

I have always been a big yogurt eater and a few years ago switched over to Greek.  I've been buying the flavored Chobani and Fage.  A few weeks ago I watched the 60 Minutes piece on sugar and I know I have a bit of a sugar addiction so I'm not trying to cut back - that's when I realized there are between 16-20 grams of sugar in one of the flavored yogurts. No wonder I like them so much.  This week I am trying the plain yogurt and adding in frozen fruit but I just don't like it at all.  Anyone else do the plain yogurt and what do you add in?  Anyone still eat the flavored despite the sugar?  I was such a big yogurt eater before and now I'm not sure what to do.

Re: Is there too much sugar in the flavored Greek yogurts?

  • Chobani was my bridge to Greek yogurt. I didn't like Greek yogurt at first, but the Chobanis helped me transition until I realized the same thing about their sugar content. I still can't do plain Greek yogurt, but I eat non-fat Vanilla (which still has some sugar, but half or less-than-half compared to the Chobani w/fruit). I'll sometimes add in berries as well. I do use plain Greek yogurt as a sub for sour cream. I haven't tried plain Greek yogurt with something like Splenda or stevia, but that will be my next step.

ETA: The brand I currently eat is Atlanta Fresh. So addicted to it.

  • I eat plain and put fruit and Splenda in it - I know that's really not any better, but I like it better than sugar. DH likes it with honey. I think if you really want to stick with your yogurt, though, do it. There are much worse sugary snacks, just try to limit the rest of your sugar intake if you can't go without yogurt.
  • I realized the same thing recently about sugar in yogurts and I'm also trying to cure my borderline addiction to sugar. I've been eating lowfat plain greek yogurt (from Trader Joes) with chopped fresh strawberries in it. And I mean a LOT of strawberries. I can't stand it plain, so there needs to be enough fruit in it that every bite has a couple of chunks of fruit in it for me to eat it. But I used to eat not nearly enough fruit, so I figure it's fine to eat a lot of berries this way. Also the lowfat greek yogurt tastes way better than the nonfat, especially with such a low sugar content. For now, I'm completely avoiding foods with added sugars or fake sweeteners, they just make me crave more sugars, so no more flavored yogurts. Fruit doesn't make me crave sugary foods the way refined sugar does.
  • I buy plain Greek yogurt.  My go-to add in is Stevia, but if I don't have that I'll use an artificial sweetener packet, honey, vanilla, or (if there's nothing else) just some fruit.

I wondered this too.  I started eating the Dannon oikos in the blue container single size non fat and it is delicious.  It has 19 grams of sugar in it.  I have never tried plain with stevia.
  • I am the opposite...I hate the flavored greek style yogurts because they are cloyingly sweet Ick!

I will put a little bit of honey in my plain yogurt.  It i want texture I will add some grape nuts or mini dark chocolate chips.

  • Greek Gods is the smoothest and least tangy I have found.. I jsut add pumpkin puree and/or cinnamon.. mmmmm..
  • Our plain Greek has 6g sugar because milk has lactose, natural milk sugar......the flavored has 19g sugar so we are looking at 13g sugar, basically 4g per teaspoon so it is looking like I have 3 teaspoons (1 tablespoon) added sugar. Yikes!

Oh geez, Caramel 0% is to die for. I love me some Atlanta Fresh!

  • I had almost accepted the fact that I will never like Greek yogurt, but this sounds amazing!  Definitely going to give it a try.
  • I eat plain Fage and top it with a drizzle of honey and whatever fruit I have on hand.  I especially like it with mandarin oranges!  I love the flavored Fage, but it's so much cheaper to get a giant tub of plain at Costco.

  • One option is to get the Fage that you mix in the fruit/sugar yourself.  And slowly start mixing less and less in.

I can my own jam in the summer, and it is very blow sugar (like 1/4th the sugar of regular jam).  I sometimes buy plain yogurt and stir in a spoonful of jam, since it is mostly fruit, but enough sugar to take the edge of the tang.

I do eat the fully sweetened greek yogurt.  I use 1 container in my smoothie each morning.  It is mixed with a banana, 1 c. frozen fruit, water, and a bunch of veggies. Yes it is a lot of sugar, but it is my whole breakfast, and I am fine with that.  But if I am going to eat it plain I don't stir in all the fruit with the Fage.
