Dominican Republic during September- am I out of my mind?

DH and I are beginning to plan our anniversary trip. Due to work schedules, we've realized that going for an extended trip over labor day weekend would work best.We haven't done a land-based trip for quite some time (aside from our wedding) and we're leaning toward an AI in D.R.

Are we out of our minds doing a land-based trip during the peak of hurricane season? We've cruised the last 3 labor day weekends, and knock on wood we haven't had to be diverted due to storms, but we did cruise the week after the storms last year, which did have a small impact on our touring.

Convince me one way or another on this... I'm riding the fence

  • nope. just be aware that one can happen and purchase trip insurance that covers you for weather related cancellation/interruptiona nd know your hotels and air carrier's rules for cancellation and rebooking.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I like going to places when it is super hot, just hit the pool and beach all day.  The only negative is the possibility of hurricanes.

    this exactly

    Anniversary

  • My DH and I went to Jamaica in September and it rained one day for about 20 minutes, otherwise it was sun, sun, and more sun. The weather is chaotic as it is so you can never really predict what will happen, but be prepared with trip insurance as a PP mentioned. Also, I think that some parts of the island tend to get less of a hit than other parts, so maybe look more towards that area. But again, you can never know what the weather has in store. I say go for it.

  • Definitely book trip insurance just in case. I would keep in mind how crazy and dry the weather is. My FIL lives in FL and he's predicting a crazy hurricane season down there this year since the weather has been so unseaonably warm and dry so far. I can definitely see where he's coming from, so as long as your OK with possibly cancelling/rescheduling last minute or bad weather, go with it. You never know what the future will bring, but definitely get trip insurance if you go!
  • I prefer the the caribbean during hurricane season. Prices are much cheaper and the weather is still good. The most that happens usually is a 20 minute shower. Just get travel insurance and you'll be fine.
