NPCER: cable substitutes, Netflix vs. Hulu+ vs. Amazon
So, we bought a Roku box, which is awesome enough that we're considering abandoning cable.
We already have Netflix.
Should we also get Hulu+ and Amazon Prime? Does anybody have all three? How much overlap is there?
I know there additional benefits to Amazon Prime... but I'm not sure how much we'd use them.
...all three together are a fraction of what we pay for cable now.
Also, does anybody know if you can just get the HBO channel for Roku, or if you have to also be a cable HBO subscriber?
Thanks!

Re: NPCER: cable substitutes, Netflix vs. Hulu+ vs. Amazon
We have netflix and hulu plus but no Amazon. We do have Amazon Prime in general but it isn't accessible with the 360 which is what we have.
We absolutely love it. There is some overlap but hulu plus has newer episodes that netflix doesn't have as well as more series.
Also, netflix just got 24. I might die.
As for Amazon prime, if you buy things via amazon, it's worth having even if you don't do any streaming. The fact that you'd be able to stream with it might make it worth your while.

You have to be a cable HBO subscriber for HBOGO.
We have Hulu plus and Netflix (and cable). Hulu is more TV and more current seasons of TV, so we don't find it redundant to have both esp for the price.
I haven't tried Amazon Prime, but I do make use of their a la carte content, which is great for newer movies. We watch movies so infrequently that a la carte makes the most sense, even vs. Netflix discs.
Oops.
We use a Roku box with Netflix, HuluPlus and Amazon (Prime). I love Amazon Prime, but mainly because of the free 2 day shipping on most orders. Their prime selection isn't all that great, IMO, and most of it can be found elsewhere. On the rare occasion that we pay for shows or movies, I stream it from Amazon.com. Netflix's offerings suck balls and I would cancel it if DH would let me.
We watch everything else through HuluPlus. Although you can find the same content elsewhere, it's well worth the $7.99/month to have basically an online DVR, where I can go to watch (almost) all of my shows.
the only problem we're having with the Roku box is that you can access Hulu+, but not plain ole' Hulu.

I have a Roku too. As far as I know, you still have to have a HBO subscription to get it on the Roku. At least, I haven't been able to figure it out. I've had Amazon prime, but that was b/c they gave me a free year associated with the amazon mom thing. That was great when my kids were babies, but unless you buy a lot of stuff on amazon, it probably won't be worth it now. I didn't think the shows were worth it. Hulu+ may be worth it b/c the shows are different than what's currently on Netflix. It just depends on what you want to watch. I like the older shows on Netflix and watch the new shows on Hulu before they go to the "plus" section. I don't really need a Hulu subscription. But I can definitely see why someone would benefit from both, depending on your preferences. Not so much with the shows on amazon prime, unless you use the prime for other purchases.
ETA: full disclosure, I watch 99% of my TV on a computer. My Roku has been sadly unused for a while.
We watch Netflix all the time. Can't speak for Hulu+ (but I hear it's great). And while we have Amazon Prime, we haven't watch a thing from their catalogue. It's not good, IMO.

I'm about to cancel my amazon prime. I don't get the 2day shipping benefits in Hawaii, but I thought it would be worth it for streaming and the kindle library. Neither is very good.
We have all three, but I've only used Amazon Prime streaming for educational stuff to show to my students.
We've been cable-less for five years, and it just keeps getting easier. We never go without.
Can someone explain the Roku box to me? I am tired of paying for cable. We do watch a lot of series though like: SUV, CSI, Fringe, Client List, LIfetime movie network...etc.
We don't have any movie channels now as it's not worth it for us.
the roku box lets you stream internet via wifi to your tv.
The big stuff you can do with it is Netflix, Hulu+ and Amazon Prime. All are paid. There are also some free things you can do with it, like Crackle.
The the basic Roku box will cost you about $50.

And can you get AMC shows close to when they air? Cause without Mad Men or Walking Dead... Those are really the only shows I even care to watch.
(I realize I should probably google this...).

This is my issue. I don't like waiting days later for shows. I did google and the website is pretty general. I know netflix waits full seasons before putting shows on their website. I am not sure about Hulu +.
Is there a big difference between Roku and cable.? I also read you can hook up an antenna for basic channels.
Question re Roku - Do you have to pay for the UFC content?
ETA: Answered my own question - Yes.
I am reading and refreshing. You would have to pay for that and the sports stuff, I think.
I am trying to find a channel listing, but no luck.
We have HuluPlus, Netflix and HBOgo and we can't find a single service with AMC shows. It's a problem for us. It's only a matter of time, though.
Amazon Prime for streaming has been a total waste, but we keep it for the free shipping. I could be very happy with just HuluPlus.
