NPCER: random Game of Thrones question

I don't seem to recall Renly being gay in the books... was he?  Anyone know/have a good reason to speculate why HBO went there if he wasn't in the books?

Re: NPCER: random Game of Thrones question

  • Yes, he was.  It wasn't nearly as prominent in the books as it is on TV, but they definitely discuss his relationship with Loras and how he couldn't consummate his marriage to Margaery.

Yes, exactly. He and Renly always had time off together, and everyone said how "fancy" and such he and Loras were.

  • Huh.  For some reason in my head I thought that everyone assumed Margaery was lying when she said she didn't consummate the marriage (and that they were right and she was lying).  Crap.  I really do retain less when I read on a Kindle.

I do remember them both being fancy dressers, though.  I just didn't think that meant they were "dandies," but I guess that's exactly what it would have meant at the time.

Well, I don't think it was common knowledge that Renly was gay.  So, I imagine a lot of people really didn't believe her, but it was probably true.  She might not have been a virgin, but it wasn't Renly who de-flowered her.

  • Didn't notice a thing in my first read but saw it in my second reading. Subtle, like a quote about how they will shove something up Loras's ass to a place Renley never found, lol. Very subtle. Except the Rainbow Guard, which is not subtle at all.

That is what I was thinking - the Rainbow Guard.

I didn't read the first book until after I saw Season 1 of the series, so I think maybe I was on the look out for signs that he was gay in the book, which is definitely there.

One thing that annoyed me about the episode this week was that Arya was captured right away after Yoren was killed. In the book didn't they wander in the woods for a while, first?

  • Yeah, Arya/Hot Pie, Gendry alliance/wanderings were axed.  I was disappointed with that choice.  Also, no "HOT PIE!"  So that was terrible.

Also, Asha just doesn't match the book's description (though Theon is spot on).  Brienne was amazingly perfect.

Why do they call Asha "Yara" in the show? It annoys the hell out of me.

I understand why they captured Arya and didnt bother with all the mucking about in the woods - I liked that in the book, but in many ways, it was sort of filler and not needed for the overall plot. And lets face it, there is a lot of plot to wade through, so cutting bits like that, eh, well. Sad, but fine IMO.

I didnt get the gayness on my first read either, but once I knew about it, I saw all the subtle hints written in. Cleverly done, IMO...and brave too - Fantasy is not big on gay characters, I guess because its marketed group was always immature lonely boys? I joke...but only kinda.

  • I'm really annoyed at the Asha/Yara thing and that they didn't cast someone who actually looks like her to play the role. They were pretty specific in the book that Asha was dark haired, beautiful, and athletic and it's like they went the total opposite way for the show.

  • I think it's that I started reading the books after I saw the first season, but there are a ton of insinuations.  The two that stick out for me is the discussion of how Loras went crazy after Renly was killed and attacked a ton of the enemy and also when someone asks after him being married or something and he says "the sun has set, no candle can compare" or something like that.

Because they thought Asha was too close to Osha, allegedly.

  • Cersei also knows that Loras at least is gay and I'm pretty sure is aware that Renly was, because when she's plotting to paint Maergary as a sluttyslutbags she laments that she can't accuse Loras as being one of her lovers given his clear preference for men.

I guess the brother thing isn't really an obstacle in their world.

Well, the incest angle would just make it more juicy and scandalous.

I thought she was lying too. I didn't pick up his gayness in the books at all.

I thought I was going crazy when they were calling Asha "yara." I didn't remember that being her name but I was too lazy to check. Glad I am not misremembering that as well. Especially because she becomes a bigger character in Feast of Crows which is the last one I read. Still waiting for damn dance of dragons from the library.

  • Yeah, I think the Rainbow Guard was the most obvious flag in the books.

I think it's way more overt in the show, and I don't think Margery completely knew that Renly and Loras were an item in the books. They're making Margery into a much more powerful and more major character in the show (as well as increasing her age, like the other characters).

I don't know if I remembered that Loras was Renly's lover in the books, but... the super-pretty "knight of flowers"? Should have known.

Yeah, I really like Asha in the book. The character on the show I think I hate.

  • Reeve, you're right, it was a legitimate cut.  Still made me go "what??"

I heard the same thing about Asha/Osha.

Totally disappointed in the casting for Asha, though.  She doesn't look at all like I expected she should.

And yeah, I knew Renly was gay in the books (the Rainbow Guard was a pretty dead giveaway, as was his relationship with Loras).  I like that they are making it a bit more obvious on the screen.
