Good News Wednesday!!!

I got to sleep in today and I got my package from Amazon (with books and DVDs) today. So I have something to do this rainy weekend.

Re: Good News Wednesday!!!

  • I have a glass of wine.  That's pretty good news.
  • I slept in, then lunch with H, dinner with a friend, and doing a lot of nothing in between! I'm so glad to not be working today :)
  • I've spent no money today.  I feel po' lately so this is a big win.

I made pulled pork in the crock pot yesterday and I've been feasting on it ever since.  I've even gone wild and gotten buns to eat them on.  WATCH OUT, world!

  • The landscaping is being done for our house this week.  Soon, we won't look like we're living in a construction zone!

  • I'm having coffee with 2 friends I haven't seen in awhile, DH and I are making tacos tonight and THE SUN IN SHINING (it's been forever!).

  • Board meeting is over, I'll be finishing up in a couple of hours and we are going away tomorrow morning for 3 nights to the seaside!! And I have 3 parcels to collect from the post office, though it could be 4 by the time I get home.  I know it is the books that I ordered but it is something to read while we're away. And one book is for N and I think she'll love it!!

  • The sun was out this morning and it?s been good weather for hanging the laundry out to dry--just enough breeze that everything is wrinkle-free and smells good and is dry in practically no time. I call this a good laundry day.

  • I don't have any special news. I'm glad everyone else does, though!
  • We got a notice in our mailbox that we had a letter at the post office and that we had to pay 50 EUR to pick it up. I don't remember if I posted about this yesterday. One was for me, one for my H. We weren't expecting anything, and especially anything we have to pay that much for. Since I'm super paranoid about things I don't know about, I was pretty worried about it as I walked to the post office. I was imagining scenarios where the local foreigners office or something like the German FBI was waiting for me at the post office. I was wondering what they were going to do, since I have a kid, would I get a phone call? (As you've notice, I can easily jump to conclusions. And no, I haven't done anything that would cause the German FBI to come looking for me... though, I am a day or two late on my gas bill.)

It turned out to be a membership card for ADAC (I think it's like AAA). Since we don't have a car and we don't need the card, I didn't bother actually picking it up. So, my good news is that the German FBI equivalent didn't get me.

Other good news: I just woke up from a really good nap, it looks like it's going to rain really hard and I have no where to go, and I finally found the pictures I took from W's first birthday that I thought I lost.

Woah. I remember you saying you thought it might have been your visa, which I guess I could understand a 50 Euro pickup fee. This seems like an odd thing to have a fee for. Pardon my ignorance, but is it common to have to pay to pick up your mail in Germany

I don't have any Wednesday-specific good news, but I will on Saturday when FI arrives! He will be visiting me here in Ghana for two weeks. I can't wait!

  • I have a feeling it was a membership card with Cash On Delivery to cover the membership fee. I don't know if it's common, this is the first time it's happened for us. To be fair, we were members last year. We ended up not getting a car, though and I thought the card just expired. I think it's been over a year since we got it. I don't recall ever getting notification to update our membership. So strange.

Why in the world would they want ?50 for that? Did you guys sign up for the ADAC membership? It costs something like ?45/year, but you have to proactively sign up for it, which I'm assuming you didn't since you don't have a car. You might want to look into why they're sending you cards. We have it because I was too much of a sucker to say no when they offered it in my drivers' ed class (yes, totally awesome to have to do that with a bunch of 17 year olds...), but it has saved my ass on more than one occasion.

OH, HOLD UP ... Sorry, I didn't scroll down further. You have to cancel your membership, otherwise it automatically continues for another year. I'm pretty sure that's why they want the ?50.I think it's six weeks before the new year begins for your card (but I'm not 100% on that). You'll most likely have to pay for the coming year; but you can also send a letter of cancelation now (Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, bitte k?ndigen Sie unsere ADAC Mitgleidschaft zum n?chstm?glichen Termin), then it'll be automatically canceled for the year after this one.

  • It's raining. That's good news because it's washing the pollen out of the air!

  • I'm going to just let my husband take care of it at this point. I think he'll call them to check if that even was the card (that's just my guess). We got our membership in December or January (2010/11). I'm not sure why he even insisted on getting it at the point he did.

I do wish that these types of notices in my mailbox would say who it's from. I don't think they do that in the states either, but it's something I always wished they did. This isn't the first time I've had to go to pick up something I probably wouldn't have, this is just the first time I've had to pay a lot to pick something up.

  • My good news today came from my gynocologist, who told me if I went into labor now, I could go to my hospital of choice and not some high-tech university clinic. And I don't have to rest so much anymore, which means I can hop up and down until this baby falls out.
  • I got accepted into my PhD program of choice with a really good research stipend.  I've been unemployed/underemployed since moving back to the US in late 2010, so I'm really excited!  That and we have tickets for Wicked tonight!

    Oh heck yes - congratulations!!

The good news here is that it's 7 pm, I'm home alone and in my PJs. I might go to bed at 9.

  • The H is out, MIL is spending the night at SILs and I went to an amazing couscous place to pick up my dinner for my night alone with M. We also stopped by the monopriw to pick up wine and ice cream bars.

Bad news is since M knew we had ice cream at home (which is super rare), he refused to eat more than a few bites of his dinner, I gave in and he has now had two ice cream bars. I hope he wont say anything to H!

  • May I be late with mine?  I had to get to the bottom of the issue before I could post it as good news.  But the good news is the State of Louisiana is NOT auditing me for my 2011 tax return.  I have been worried about that since my brother called me to tell em the Revenue Department wanted me - via three letters and two phone calls.  As soon as I got off the phone with them, I did a happy dance.

  • i know i'm a fairly new/irregular poster, but i need to share with someone who *gets it*.

i got a call from citizenship and immigration today to say that my file is complete and my landing date is scheduled for the first week of may.

yay canada for processing much faster than expected!

i can't wait to get a job and actually plan for our future. i feel like everything has been on hold and we were just dreaming until we know if/when i have a job and what that looks like. we can have kids. we can buy a house. we can plan for more than a few months at a time. it's still so surreal. we're definitely celebrating tonight!
