S.J.Lee intro's Houston Metro Bus Safe system... TSA does random searches

I guess the lamestream media doesn't care about this because other than the station news clip (second link), everything Google brought up was related to 'freethinkers' or 'libertynow' or some other... out there site.  What none of the articles answered was what's going to happen when they want to check my bags and I tell them hell no?  I guess they escort me off the bus... aaaaaaannnnnd I sue.  It's just a matter of time before it's challenged in court.

This isn't to say I'm against undercover officers on buses watching for criminals.  But random bag checks, asking me where I'm going or what I'm up to... yeah if I'm not doing anything shady, leave me the eff alone.

A new program will place undercover police officers on METRO buses to curb crime, even terrorism, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said Friday.

"If you think you're going to be a bad actor on buses, get ready. You are going to have a short-lived time frame," Jackson Lee said.

The TSA, METRO, and the Harris County Constable's Office Precinct 7 are collaborating in the effort labeled Bus Safe.

METRO will not disclose the routes or dates the undercover officers will be working, but the idea is to target areas that have seen trouble before.

Local 2 has covered a series of crimes over the years on board METRO buses and at METRO bus stops.

"It's a good idea. We rely on these buses. We need them to be safe," one rider said.

But another woman was concerned about the possibility of random bag searches.

"I don't want them looking through my bag. I have a lot of stuff in there," rider Dominique Guillory said.

  • Is there really that much criminal activity on these busses?  I don't mind them having random undercover officers on the busses, but them asking me questions and looking through my stuff I'd have a prob with.

  • Well one article mentions having them on the routes in the... less safe parts of town, which I can see/understand.  I'm not getting the need to do random searches or ask me where I'm going/coming from.

I don't live in Huston, but I've seen people pull knives on each other on buses before. People get their stuff stolen all the time, though that's usually a lot more subtle.

Around here we have undercover police on the buses and bart regularly. Or at least we're supposed to. If they're UC, I wouldn't know, right? In any case, I've never had anyone ask to see my bag or anything like that. I've been asked for my ticket on muni, but that's all.
