Are prescription sunglasses worth it?

I have terrible eyesight, but I've never owned prescription sunglasses. Are you thinking they are worth it?

Any good places to try on sunglasses and place Rx in them (other than Lenscrafters)? Any good online places? I am looking for Chanel shades most likely.

Am I able to buy regular sunglasses (I purchased a pair of Prada last year) and then have a Rx shades placed in it?

Re: Are prescription sunglasses worth it?

  • If you don't wear contacts and wear only glasses, then you need prescription sunglasses.  How can you see clearly otherwise?

Cant help you on Rx sunnies, I wear contacts.

  • If you don't wear contacts then yes they are so worth it.
  • Even if you wear contacts, they are worth it, IMO. I hate wearing contacts on the beach, so I love my Rx sunglasses. That said, I don't wear them enough to invest in Chanel or anything high end.

I got mine at America's Best when I got new glasses, so I could get somewhat of a discount.

  • I just got a new pair. I did get mine at Lenscrafters but they were $30 cheaper than Sunglass Hut plus 25% off the frames and lenses.

I think they are worth it because I wear my glasses 99% of the time.

You may be able to have RX lenses put into your current frames. The girl at Sunglass Hut said as long as they are not to small and not curved, they would most likely work. She also told me that if I bought them and they didn't work, I could return or exchange them.

I got these Tory Burch TY7036 in black, they were $300 with RX polarized lenses

  • For me, no, b/c I wear contacts most of the time.  If I didn't have contacts I would need Rx sunglasses.

  • They are definitely worth it.  I can't live without mine.

I got a pair of Kate Spades from my eye doctor, but I know that Sunglass Hut usually labels all of their glasses as to whether or not you can have prescription lenses put in them or not.

  • A good optician will be able to tell you whether your choice of frame is doable as a prescription sunglass option.

I've never bought anything but OTC frames for conversion to sunglasses. Rayban, Serengeti, Chanel and Persols are some that have worked for me in the past.

  • You know what's worth it?  LASIK!  :)  Before Lasik, I wore contacts even when swimming, boating, etc, so I just had regular sunglasses.  If you don't always wear contacts, then prescription sunglasses are a necessity in my opinion.
  • I wear contacts as well as glasses and I think it's definitely worth it to have prescription sunglasses.  I wear them during allergy season, on long drives, etc.  I've only purchased them through independent optometrists and the opticians helped me find the frames.  I know some Maui Jims can have Rx lenses.  My prescription is pretty strong, so the lenses are a little thick (even with the high index, which costs more).   Also, because I use them to drive, I got polarized lenses, which was an additional cost.

  • YES!! 2 thumbs up. I got mine from the eye doctor, they look glamorous (Oliver Peoples!) the doc said they can RX pretty much any nice shades. Go to a trendy or boutique type eye doctor for the best selection I guess. The Optician helped me pick the best frames for my face and I get tons of compliments on my eye glasses and shades.

  • It really depends on the structure of the non-rx sunglasses.  I had a pair of Gucci sunglasses and there was no place to unscrew to put in the new lenses.  You could probably take them to LensCrafters and see if it's even a possibility.  I also just go to LensCrafters to try on glasses and then scour the web to find an online retailer to save on cost.

I think they're worth it.  I really do see a huge difference in how clear things are while driving in them.  I also like that the lenses are a tad bit darker than the non-rx sunglasses because they obviously block more sunlight and I squint less.

What online retailer would you recommend/are reputable?

I really don't have any recommendations for online retailers.   I'd first go try on shades, write down the model number and then google like crazy and see what retailers google comes up with.  Then google to see if you can find any independent reviews of the online retailer.  Is there a reason you're against LensCrafters?  They really did help me find some great sunglasses and helped me find something that worked with my face shape.  And it's funny because they looked almost identical to my non-rx gucci shades that I had.

  • Yes, they do come in handy.  I wear contacts most of the time but my prescription sunglasses get lots of use on the beach and during allergy season when I'm in glasses.  So yes, I think they are worth it.
