It's getting a lot of press because of Starbucks, but the bugs are used in a lot of fabric, makeup, and food.

I'm totally unbothered by the use of the bugs for coloring. I do think they need to better advertise (post? I'm not sure what word I'm looking for) their ingreedients, though.
Yeah, bugs have been used as a source of coloring, not to mention as protein, for centuries, this does not bother me.
There was a blurb on NPR right before passover about the possibility of farmers market not being kosher b/c of the possibility of bugs. I found the whole piece quite amusing b/c I just can't personally fathom worrying about an aphid on my parsley, but I understand it matters to some people. Still, don't most processed foods have insects?
If people knew the weird things that were was in lots of common stuff, they'd freak out.
I know the idea of eating a bug sounds gross to us in the US, but how it that much different than eating a shrimp? Or any kind of animal, really?
I took entomology as a fun side course in college. That's where I learned about the FDA's defect levels and their allowable levels of insect parts, rodent hairs, molds, etc. in foods. The canned tomatoes still makes me want to
Yes, they do. I don't work in the food industry, but I work with folks who used to and they say the FDA has maximum bug parts limits. It's a small amount, but food isn't processed under aseptic conditions. Something's bound to get into it.
