Photos in the LA Times

Have you heard about the photos published in the LA Times yesterday showing 82nd Airborne soldiers posing with the corpses of suicide bombers?

Here's the CNN article.  There is a link to the LA Times' website with the photos, be warned.

Obviously this is needs to be addressed by the DoD immediately but what are your thoughts on the soldier that released the photos to the newspaper?  He said he did it to bring attention to a "breakdown in leadership".  What I've read made no mention of whether he attempted to bring this up to his chain of command.

The DoD also asked that the photos not be published at all.  What are your thoughts on that request and the paper's decision to publish some of the photos?

Re: Photos in the LA Times

  • The Soldier who released the photos to the press is just as vile as the Soldiers who appeared in the photos, however, I don't blame the press for actually running them. It's their job.  That Soldier who released them with the intention of "drawing attention to the safety risk" needs to be briefed on what IG and Chaplains are for.

  • I can see why the DOD asked them not to be published due to the possible back-lash from the general public. There are already people that have an extreme dislike for the military and stuff like this, I'm sure, is used to support their case. That doesn't change that there are clearly some serious issues within the military that need to be addressed if things like that are happening and on a pretty regular basis apparently. In the end, though, I'm really just disturbed that they posed with body parts in the first place. Yuck.

  • You both summarized my feelings.

Ojo, here's a question for you.  Let's say the soldier who released the photos is still serving...can he be brought up for discipline as well?  I'm not saying "everyone grab a torch and burn him" because he's a whistle blower but I am curious to see if he'd be subject to any type of charge.

  • I agree with PPs.  Some of the comments on the CNN article are exactly what Sammy mentions and that's a shame.
I don't want to be on MSNBC, yo.

It's hard to speculate without knowing the full extent of his involvement.  Did he take the photos himself?  If not, how did he obtain them?  The answers to those questions could make a big difference.  If he took the photos, he's just as guilty as the guys who were posing.  At the very least, he could absolutely face something administrative (like a reprimand and UIF) for not following the chain of command.  Depending how hard his unit wants to push it, I suppose they could do NJP for dereliction in that he knew or should have known it was his duty to report the incident to his chain of command.  Based on the article, it sounds like the Soldier "complained about security concerns," but that is not the same as "telling them his peers were posing with body parts."

I can see the DOD's point about the photos potentially inciting violence, but I don't think the LA Times did anything wrong in publishing. Exposing institutional corruption and misdeeds is one of the primary functions of the fourth estate (the press), and the fact that they CAN publish damning information that is true about governmental/military misbehavior is one of the great things about this country.

  • I think the guy who released them is a douche.

I don't blame the paper for publishing them.  However, I can blame them for publishing them right now.  Things are extremely volitile over there right now and they are using the Koran burning and the pics of the Marines who peed on the dead as fuel for their fire.  Now, we have given them more fuel.  Nothing good will come from this at all.

  • I'm surprised that soldiers that go outside the wire are still allowed to take personal cameras with them.

It isn't always personal cameras.  MH's unit has to take cameras with them on every mission.  They have to photograph any evidence collected, among other things.

Oh I know...that was part of T's responsibility when they went on missions but I think I'd be less inclined to put evidence of my douchetastic behavior on a military controlled camera vs. my own camera.   Then again...I would hope I wouldn't be doing things like this in the first place.
