I've been teaching group fitness for several years but never had to count the music.
I have been asked to learn a class format where I have to teach on the 32 count (leading warm up, giving safety cues & explaining muscles used). Does any one have tips on learning how to teach on the 32 count? I never did dance so I have to focus a lot on counting. Any tips on learning this or is it just practice....
Re: aerobics teachers
I'm surprised you don't count now? Doesn't that help with choreography?
I'm thinking what that a 32 count means is that there are 4, 8 counts and each count is a movement, or step.
I've been teaching yoga, pilates, bootcamp, cycle and water aerobics ...all formats that don't require you to count.
This new format is not step (THANK GOD) but has a step class type warm up (what I'm struggling with) and is a low weight/high repetition class (I can do this easily)
32 count = 4 groups of 8 count measures
I am no help but you have my sympathy. I would love to teach (I love taking classes) but I would be a hot mess! I was a marching band failure for the same reason, lol.
I am thinking about doing yoga teacher training instead for the same reason
I used to teach step aerobics about 10 years ago. What worked for me was to put together the routine before hand and make sure it was a combo of 4x8 or 2x16 counts, unless it's a really repetitive, beginning class where 8x4 routines are fine.
It takes a lot of practice so I would go over the routine several times before introducing it to the class. You also need to practice how to break it down if it's a complex routine.
Is your music set to the right count? I had to purchase music mixes from professional companies to be able to design my routine to the correct count.
The only way I have learned for BodyStep is by doing it over and over until it comes 100% naturally.. 32 count is pretty natural for your muscles because it's even (like you said 4 group, 8 measures). If you're struggling, try thinking of it as 8 of 4 with repeats... but I'm not sure you can do that since I don't know exactly WHAT you're doing with those 8 count measures...
sorry..
hot yoga teacher training = one of the best things I have chose to do. one of the hardest, but one of the best.
My music is provided by the gym and is 132bpm. I'm trying to dig through our selection to find something slightly slower (I think that would be easeir).
-march in place feet narrow, march in place legs wide, single step touches, double step touches, leg curl (heel to butt), toe tap, heel tap and stretches.
I've got in a "routine" and now I'm practicing explaining what we're working at the same time....the dogs think I'm crazy!
AHHH this makes sense! I have only ever taught to the 8 count. I would write up choreography based on 4 moves of 8 counts to creates a block of 32. I actually have a diaper box from BJ's filled with my group ex CD's. Been thinking of putting them on craigslist since I don't teach anymore.
