Sad face

My high school cousin is a fundie, for background. Her parents are uber conservative and super Christian and have passed on their extreme opinions to their kids. They are also great people, but I tend to steer away from certain topics when in their home.

Anyway, the cousin called global warming "global whining" on facebook, and I hope to god she has a chance to find her own opinions at some point. Get all perspectives before keeping your parents's.

Look with your special eyes.

Re: Sad face

  • Gotta love the religious extremists.  If your religious views are very extreme, then you are an extremist.:(

  • I will never stop being thankful that religion wasn't a part of my upbringing. It sucks that beliefs like that are so easy to ingrain in a child and so hard to break free from as an adult.
  • Hmm, they do not sound like such "great people" to me!

This is exactly how I'm raising my children. Though my husband's family is super conservative southern baptist (bob jones, no less) and are bound and determined to teach my 3 year olds about Jesus dying for their sins. To which my blonde one replied "If I fall off the swing, I'll hit my head and die for your sins, too".

    OMG lol!

H and I were godparents in a baptism this weekend and I was grossed out when the pastor was all "cleansing Abby of her sins" - SERIOUSLY? She's a tiny fooking baby. She doesn't have sins. That's such bullshits.

Wow a lot of hate on this thread. I'm by no means an extremist but I do consider myself religious. I agree that non-nuclear family members trying to push their religious agenda is WAY out of line but why in God's name (pardon the pun) would you agree to be godparents if you feel the way you do? That's like wiping before you poop - makes no sense.

LOL.  I agree with this.  If you don't understand the point of, or agree with, baptism, why agree to be a godparent.  The thought behind cleansing an infant of their sins is that we're all born with "original sin."

On the topic of global warming, my mom doesn't believe in it either.  Not because of any religious reason, she just doesn't believe it.  She also thinks Obama is a Muslim, and wouldn't vote for him because Hussein is his middle name.  The point is, it's not just religious nutjobs who don't believe science.

    1) The bolded is not a pun.

    2) I grew up in the church. I don't really consider myself religious, though I do still consider myself Christian, I don't find that I fully agree with all of the beliefs of the church I was raised in. However, I do feel like it's kind of odd that someone would ask you (general you, not just BBE) to be their child's godparents if you're not particularly religious. The whole idea of being someone's godparent is that you're there to help guide them in their faith. If you're not religious, how can they expect you would be able to do that for their child?

    3) The idea of baptism is not to take away the sin of that particular baby. It's to wash away the sins that all humans are said to possess. It's the reason Christians can simply ask for forgiveness from God, and it is given (in the Protestant religions, at least).

I assume this was a Catholic ceremony in which case, yes, it's because the belief is that we are all born with original sin. However, nowadays, baptisms are more like "welcome to the church" parties. No need to get "grossed out". I don't even know what that means. Barf is gross. dead animals are gross. A baptism? Meh, not really gross - just not your thing.
