I guess I'm the only one

A few weeks ago I went to a party with my mom and my aunt showed up with a shirt that she had hand knitted herself. Very well done by the way. Since I had told my mom that I wanted to take maternity pictures with something like that, she asked my aunt if she could do one for me. She agreed and got to work really fast. Well, today she calls and tells me its done. When I asked her how much it would be she said $40.00. I was expecting to pay her, but I guess I didn't think it would be that much. She told me she spent $25dlls on material and I know that the whole process of knitting takes a while and alot of work, but I don't know, I guess I didn't think it she would charge me that much. So I guess from now on I won't do anymore favors to anyone. All this time we've been taking pictures of family for free because dh and I wouldn't have the heart to charge anyone, but I guess we should be charging. Anyway, whatever, I guess I have a new shirt to wear to the beach, since I took my maternity pictures yesterday with a shirt similar to the one I ordered from her that only cost me $20.00.

Re: I guess I'm the only one

  • I don't think she was being unfair. She paid $25 for the yarn alone. It likely took hours to make, so she really only charged you $15 for her time and effort.
  • It took more than hrs. It took days! And to be honest the type of work she did (or I think she did based on the shirt she had on that day) should really cost more now that I think about it. I was just a little surprised since I never charge any of my family anything when they ask for things from me/us. We've taken I don't know how many pictures and edit them and give them a cd and the release letter when they have trouble printing them. We also take alot more than an hr in the photo sessions plus the time editing and never expect anything in return. I've just see that everyone charges for what they do, and from now on I will too. It's only fair, since work is work Smile. BTW, she is a very nice lady and I like my aunt alot! She one of my favorite aunts. Oh, and I guess I got this whole not charging thing messed up when I married J since his family will do things for family and not charge all the time.

  • I understand what you are saying, and I am sure that I would feel the same way. When you are giving away your services for free to family (pictures, editing, etc), and then have to pay for a service from the same family, it is frustrating.

I think it all differs with families/ cultures/ etc. My grandma knits blankets for lots of babies (when anyone asks pretty much). If anything, the yarn is paid for. She volunteers to do the rest of it.

I guess next time, with your family, you will have to talk money in advance.

Anyways, I hope the pictures went well. Smile

  • I get where you're coming from. In my family it would be strange if someone made something for someone and charged them for it, but I guess every family is different!

Unless it's her job (not a hobby), in which case it makes a little more sense. Meaning if my SIL was a baker I'd still pay her to make a cake for my bday party, but if she works at Home Depot and just volunteered to make a cake b/c she felt like making one I wouldn't expect to pay.

  • In my family that sort of thing would be a gift. I can totally see why you are frustrated.
