do you think it's possible to lose weight without being hungry?

I'm not sure that I do.. I think a little hunger is a good thing - it's your (ok, my) body's way of saying "hey! there's a calorie shortfall going on here!

WDYT? losing = hungry? or is there some sort of secret I don't know about?

And, because someone's going to ask, I'm counting calories, eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly. I don't ever go below 1400 calories and I eat back what I burn (as per HRM). The weight is coming off and I'm pleased. I'm just a little hungry and I've been at it a month so it;s not like I'm not used to it. I'm just kind of hungry. Most of the time.

Re: do you think it's possible to lose weight without being hungry?

  • It's possible. I *hate* being hungry, so I will continue to eat at the expense of a loss if that's how I feel. What kinds of foods are you eating? Try adding more high-water, high-fiber things to get a boost of volume without a lot more calories.
  • I think so.  When I eat foods that have more protein I am less hungry.  My problem is I confuse boredom with hunger.  I eat all my snacks at work early in the day, not because I am hungry, but because I am bored.  I try and actually listen to my body and figure out when I am actually hungry.

  • I definitely believe you can lose weight and not be hungry. I have my caloric intake set at 1640 right now which is PLENTY, considering I eat my exercise calories back too.

As long as you are eating more volume/less calorie foods you won't be hungry. Lots of huge salads, veggies, whatever, instead of high calorie foods that don't fill you up.

I tried eating less/feeling hungry but my body was not getting enough fuel to lose weight.

I've lost 18 lbs and am 1lb away from goal from eating more/not feeling hungry.

  • I have lost 157 lbs and I never let myself feel hungry. I eat as much vegetables and protein as I need to feel 100% satisfied. If I'm hungry I'll eat a whole pepper (only 36 calories) or a huge piece of chicken etc. I eat very little sugar / carbs, but I eat 1900+ calories a day.

  • I agree, you don't have to be hungry to lose.

I lost over 20lbs and ate 6 times a day, and ate between 1700-1800 cals/day.

  • I think if I was constantly or regularly hungry than my calorie deficit is probably too large and not sustainable for the long haul. I'm only hungry when work or being busy pushes off eating. I think I would rather lose weight slowly and not be hungry, than lose weight quickly and be hungry a lot.

  • If you are eating right, your body will let you know the minute it needs more nutrients.  It's like "oh, I just got hungry". Time for more nutrients.
  • I don't think being hungry is a bad thing, it's not an automatic sign that ohmygahyouarestarvinggggggggggggggggggggggg

I've read enough interviews with elite athletes about their nutrition that it's not uncommon to hear them say they live on the edge of hunger during certain parts of their training cycles.

  • Definitely possible, and the key is to have a diet heavily comprised of proteins, veggies, and healthy fats with little (fruit) to no (everything else) sugar.
  • I can see both sides of this. I think it's possible to lose weight without feeling hungry if you are fueling your body with high-volume, low-calorie foods but I also think that you don't have to feel full all the time. It's okay to eat breakfast, feel satisfied, and then be hungry again by the time lunch rolls around. I'm guilty of constantly snacking to avoid feeling hungry, but that keeps me from eating actual meals, which I'm trying to change.

I'm almost never hungry and I've recently inched the scale down a bit. Back when I was losing the 30lbs I kept off I was rarely hungry either. I've done calorie restricted hungry-all-the-time dieting as well and that was a miserable fail.

For the past year I eat mostly veggies and meat. As a percentage of calories, it's usually high fat (over 50%), and then a mix of protein and carb (higher protein, lower carb). If I want to increase my appetite then I lower fat and up the carb.

At least 2 things stimulate appetite in most people: exercise and easily digestible carbs/sugar. And then eating for entertainment is another issue, though it's harder to eat much with boredom eating if your hunger is truly satiated.

If it's boredom snacking you want to limit then you might want to make some rules for yourself. For example, make snacks a little more "boring" but filling and nutritious. Veggies. Hard boiled eggs. Pieces of plain chicken/turkey. Avoid things made from flour and/or sugar. If that doesn't work then you could eliminate fruit or dried fruit, nuts, cheese which are easy to overeat.

  • Yes, but you have to eat a lot- I keep a tray of hard boiled eggs in my fridge- when I start to get hungry I will eat 1 or 2 egg whites or a tiny bit of low sodium cottage cheese.  That takes away the hunger until my next meal.

  • It depends on how hungry you are talking.

For me to maintain a 1500-1600 calorie daily intake I will be hungry some.  I guess if I ate only beans, vegetables, unsweetened yogurt, etc (I am a vegetarian) maybe I wouldn't be.  But that sounds horrible.  I would rather eat a few tasty things (within reason- but I had a cookie at the grocery store this morning, and the kids and I are making homemade pudding this afternoon) and be a little hungry between meals at times.  If I was trying to stick 100% to veggies and protein only, I would fall right off the wagon and go crazy.

This is the case for me as well.  If I eat a high fat, low (simple) carb diet, I can definitely lose weight without hunger.  However, there is a psychological component - if I get bored, I can find myself thinking I'm hungry when I'm really not.  On my busy days, when I'm truly preoccupied, I find it very easy to go without feeling hungry.

  • Hungry as in "oh, I need to eat soon" isn't bad.  Hungry as in "I'm going to rip off someone's head" is not!  Maybe try waiting 5-10 minutes or drinking some water.  If you're still hungry but not ready for a meal I think it's just fine to have some fruit, a veggie, etc.

  • You don't want to be hungry to a point where your stomach is growling.  Someone told me once that growling means your metabolism is slowing down.  Dunno whether it's true but I wouldn't take chances.  A little cottage cheese or almonds can help get through the pangs.  I have found that a full glass of water sometimes helps.
