Did the post office charge you to change your address?

I thought I'd save myself some time by filling out a change of address with the USPS online.  At the very end they ask for my cc info to charge me $1 to verify that I am who I say I am.

Is this weird?  Do they now charge you if you go into the local branch to turn in the change of address card? I realize $1 isn't a big deal, I just wasn't expecting it and it creeps me out a little. :)

  • Nope, it's standard if you do it online. I think if you print and mail or go to the post office it's free.

Ditto this.  If you do it in the post office it is free otherwise they charge a dollar in order to verify the address through the credit card company.

  • Okay, thanks. $1 is totally worth not having to load and unload two kids into a car; I just wanted to make sure it was standard.

  • Yeah, I also had to pay $1, about 6 months ago.
  • No this is standard.  Last week when I was at the post office I looked at the mail forward forms for curiosity to see if they charge as well;  the forms at my post office now just direct customers to go online.  I don't think there is any way around the $1 charge any more.

Sure there is.  You can just ask at the counter for a change of address packet.  Most POs don't leave them out because people take them for the coupons.

I did it in January by asking with the packet. Easy enough either way.
