Question about a lawyer...
We are house hunting for our first house currently. We have a realtor, but didn't even think about a lawyer. I work at a bank, and was talking to a client of mine about how we're buying a house. He owns a very large law firm in the area, and said to let him know about needing a real estate lawyer, because his firm has that too.
So, my question is, and it's nothing against him, do we really need a real estate lawyer? If so, how do people generally find them? How expensive are they? This client is a great guy, and a wonderful lawyer, but I'm pretty sure he's out of our price range even if we do need one.

Re: Question about a lawyer...
Real estate attorneys and the real estate process in general varies greatly depending on your area.
In NY we are an attorney state, attorney's draft contracts, do the closing, etc., they can charge about $1600 here. Well worth it IMO.
Speak to your Realtor and ask.
Normally we would have used a lawyer, but we're buying a foreclosure and buying the property "as is" so nothing could be changed. Also it's in the P&S that they needed to deliver a clean title with no outstanding money owed.
Our closing is Friday and my bank's lawyer will be there
This is local custom. Speak to your agent about how it's done in your area.
In some states, it's illegal to close a real estate deal without an attorney. In other states, RE attorneys are never used in a regular sale (only in ones where there are serious title issues or other highly complex problems).
Keep in mind that this is a national board and that what you read here will not always apply to you.
