Where in the world in August?
If you could go anywhere in the world for two weeks in August, based on climate, crowds, etc. where would you go?
Ideally, I'm looking for something with a budget of under $3000/person, but I'd love to here any great August ideas.
(The trans-Siberian would be my first choice, but I think I'd have to do it independently to stay in that budget, and for some reason I'm afraid that it would be too overwhelming to try to plan in a few months.)
Re: Where in the world in August?
Mmmm... Trans Siberian Railway
In lieu of that, Iceland? Argentina? Somewhere not super hot.
Kenya/Tanzania, although it may be over budget if you do a safari (depending on how fancy of one you go on). Zanzibar is gorgeous then, although it's after the wildebeest migration.
South Africa. I can't imagine how amazing spring would be there - both times I've been were in July, but it's a gorgeous country.
Scotland - won't get much better weather than August.
Good choice on the trans-Siberian; I think in 2 weeks you'd just be on a train and see one or two cities.
I had a friend that did a river cruise of Russia/Ukraine in August. She had a great time. No idea on price, though.
Not sure of where you have been previously, but the PNW (Seattle/Portland/Vancouver) is absolutely beautiful that time of year with nearly guaranteed perfect weather!
Ireland/England/Wales/Scotland would also be great in terms of weather. I am dying to go to Croatia but it would probably be quite hot in August. France would also be wonderful; Normandy/Brittany/Loire Valley/Burgundy, etc. Alaska would be good as well, although I know that is a popular month to visit the state. What about Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania?
You are indeed correct. Yes, the budget includes airfare, but it is a rough figure. I'm thinking around $1500pp for flights and $1500pp on the ground.
I'd imagine that August would be a great time in South America because it's the southern hemisphere, but you did a bit of South America last year, right? I promise I'm not stalking you. I just tend to remember when people take trips I'd love to go on. I'd love to do Chile, Peru, and/or Bolivia. I'd imagine your budget would go further if you only have to buy one intercontinental plane ticket.
I'd also love to go to Namibia that time of year. It shouldn't be too hot and it looks absolutely gorgeous.
Technically it's two budgets, since I'll pay for my tickets and he'll pay for his. But mostly I'm hesitant about traveling more in South America, because I figure I'll transfer to Rio in a year or so anyway, and I might as well wait until I'm based there to explore more.
Tanzania and Iceland were both near the top of my list already.
For years, I've been wanting to spend a week and drive the Circle Road and camp along the way. Since that can only be done during summer, the timing is right. And then he could spend another week in Norway, enjoying the summer climate, and I could save the other week of vacation to fly there another time.
And I was kind of thinking about Tanzania, because my friend whose family used to live there always raves about it. I found an 8- and a 10-day camping trip out of Nairobi to Victoria Lake, Serengeti Nat'l Park, and Ngorongoro crater that are both within the budget, but I wasn't sure about the time of year. I asked this morning and my friend said August is probably the best time of year to go, so that's really pushing that idea.
My absolute first choice would be to fly to Kigali and find a guide to take us into the DRC to Mt. Nyiragongo. But DBF is (understandably) hesitant about traveling to the DRC.
I'm eager to hear if there are any other ideas, because I'm sure there are some great things I haven't considered!
If we decide to go with a smaller budget, the Baltics would be a great idea. I've never been to Lithuania or Latvia and would like to go at some point.
Don't come to Chile or Argentina in August. Most of Chile will still be pretty cold (you wouldn't be able to do much of anything in Patagonia), and while northern Argentina would be ok, Buenos Aires will still be wintery and not nice. I think you probably know this but wanted it to be in the thread so someone else doesn't see those ideas and start planning those destinations in August!
Iceland sounds awesome, I would probably do that. In terms of other ideas, is there anywhere else in Europe you're wanting to go before you potentially move? I'd use this trip to finish up those destinations since you don't always know what your time will be like in the future.

Iceland, Iceland, Iceland. Seriously, Iceland. I've been twice and am planning my third trip this fall.
I've also been to Argentina in August (end of the month) and thought it was great. It was in the high 60s in Mendoza and like 55-60 in Buenos Aires. Switzerland was also really nice in late August.
Otherwise...for places I haven't been but would go to in August - Estonia, Russia, Mongolia, or maybe Namibia or somewhere else in Southern Africa.
Out of general curiosity, is there anything to do down south in the winter? DBF loooongs to travel somewhere cold and snowy, so if there are any winter destinations in S.America I would love to know about them!
I would like to go to Florida as Florida is a perfect place for spending holidays i have visited there before & it is the most beautiful place i have ever seen.I would like to suggest you to visit Florida for spending your holidays.

In Argentina I hear a lot about the Bariloche area for winter, and in Chile people go skiing in Chill?n or at the various resorts outside Santiago. I'm not totally sure what the area around El Chalten is like in winter, to be honest, but in Chilean Patagonia many of the touristic services shut down, and there are things you just can't do because of the weather, like hiking in Torres del Paine.
I haven't been to Bariloche, but I'd look there for winter. Chill?n is more just one resort focused on skiing whereas Bariloche has skiing but is a town with other stuff as well.
