Favorite Knitting Needles

Hi!  I want to purchase some circle needles for a friend of mine for her birthday.  I haven't been knitting long enough to pick out good ones.  Do you have a favorite set/brand?

Also - I looked for a thread with this info, but didn't find one.  If you know of one please direct me!  Thanks. :)

Re: Favorite Knitting Needles

  • A lot of time the type/brand may depend on how much $ I have sitting around, or what yarn I'm using. "Slippery" yarn typicaly needs "sticky" needles like wood/bamboo. Stickier yarn like most wool works fine with metal needles. Most people here like Addi for circular needles. Stay away from KnitPicks, at least in my experience. I've had 2 of them break on me in short order.

  • I have both the Addi Turbo and KnitPicks Harmony interchangeable circs and have been happy with both so I imagine their fixed circs are equally good.

That said, I think you should first figure out what material you want (wood or metal--I wouldn't bother with plastic) and go from there.  As DrL said, wood tends to be "stickier" with yarn which, as a relative newbie, I kind of like but others like the slickness/speed of metal needles.  What you use can also depend on the particular yarn you're working with.

Before I got my interchangeable circs I picked up one fixed bamboo circular set at Joann's that I was happy with, I think they're Clover.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • needles are a very personal thing. And it's not really about how classy they are. personally I'm an cheapo needle fan. My Granny is a classy bamboo needle person. I'd try to sneak ask her for her preferance.

circle needles tend to need a variety of them anyhow, sizes and lengths. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you might not even be able to go wrong. Because they are the type of thing to get wrapped into a project and you might have another project to do so another pair of needles is always handy to have on hand.
