How do I approach this without hurting DH's feelings?

My husband, who is an amazingly intelligent and wonderful man, has always struggled in school. When he was in grade school, he was in special education classes but for one reason or another he was never 'officially' diagnosed with a learning disability.

He has a lot of trouble in school now (he's working on completing his associates right now) and while he knows the material, he can't take tests well because he needs to take his time to understand what the test is asking.

I want to suggest to him to go into student services and speak to someone about getting help, like getting the university to allow him more time to take tests, but I don't want to offend him or make it seem like I think he isn't smart enough. I just want him to succeed. Is there a good way of going about this? Thank you!

  • The way you said it here seems fine to me.

  • What PP said. You can't sugar coat this and if it means he recieves accomadations, then there is nothing wrong. It's to help him complete his schooling. Also, most major schools provide these services- but you have to approach them.
  • You could just suggest talking to his teacher as a first step. The way you explained it, I'm sure any teacher would suggest talking to student services or figure out a way to make it work for him. If he's not receptive to that, it might be tricky to get him to talk to someone not at all involved in the situation right off the bat. Just an idea!
