Getting around Puerto Vallarta

Headed to the Nuevo Vallarta area in a few days.  I have gotten tips on how to get a cab from the airport to the resort, but what is the best way to get around after that?  We are staying at an all-inclusive, and won't want to leave the resort much during our brief four-day stay.  But if we wanted to do a little shopping or needed a few items (like bottled water), where should we go and how to get there?

Also, what is the best way to exchange dollars for pesos?  Someone advised me to pay for the cab in pesos, because the exchange rate cab drivers give you will not be as good.  Is there an ATM in the airport, so that I can just withdraw money in pesos as soon as I arrive?

Re: Getting around Puerto Vallarta

  • There was an ATM at the airport last time I was there.

We always paid cab drivers in dollars unless we were leaving and had left over pesos.

We never bought water, we would use what we could get for free from housekeeping.

There is a Walmart, though it was a bit farther than where we stayed and I don't shop at Walmart.

  • There's an ATM in the airport, but I agree with PP.  We paid for cabs, excursions and everything else in USD.  You just tell them up front you want to pay in USD and they'll give you the price in USD.  Chances are they're hiking it up a bit, but honestly to them USD are more valuable than pesos.  They can exchange them for a better rate later, and it's still pretty cheap.  It's not like you're losing dollars on the peso.

If you don't plan to leave the resort often, you can take a cab.  It may get a bit pricey, but if you're not planning to do it often, it shouldn't be that bad.  Also, if you book excursions, they'll often pick you up and deliver you back.

And the resort will have bottled water.  Especially if it's an AI the fridge should be very well stocked.  You shouldn't need to leave for that.

  • Keep in mind: Nuevo Vallarta is 15 minutes North of Puerto Vallarta, in a completely state (Nayarit, as opposed to Jalisco), so cabs to downtown PV are going to be a bit more expensive.

As far as water goes: you should check with you AI and see if they have a little sundries shop. Most of the ones I've been to there have one, where you can buy items like soda, sunscreen, souvenirs, and they also had plenty of bottled water.

For money, I usually always pull out cash at the ATM at my departure airport and take it to the money exchange place and get some spending cash before I even fly out. It's just easier that way for me, since I'm usually pretty overwhelmed once I land in Mexico. It's one less thing to worry about when getting from the plane to the cab.

  • We were able to exchange money at our AI in Nuevo Vallarta at the front desk.
