Tipping at an all-inclusive?

What's the protocol for tipping at an all-inclusive?  When DH and I stayed at a Sandals years ago, I think I remember we were not supposed to tip (like it was already included or something).  But I know the resort where I'm staying in Puerto Vallarta does allow tipping; I'm just not sure who/when/how much.  I would assume housekeeping staff -- at the end of our stay?  Waiters -- as we go or at the end? Anyone else?  Do you tip cab drivers?

Thanks for the help!

  • I've been to always tipped the bartenders, waiters and housekeeper at AI's in Mexico. Usually not a ton, but the bartenders remember and take good care of you.

  • We usually left a small tip (a few bucks) at specialty restaurants and at the bar if we go to know the bartenders or hung out for a while.

  • I didn't because I thought the whole point was you didn't have to worry about carrying money around. I guess the whole staff probably hated me.
  • I tip the bellhops, typically $5, if they carry bags up to the room.  Housekeeping $5-10 at the end of the stay, depending on how long we're there.  Waiters, I approximate what I think 10-15% of the bill would be and leave that as we go.  Bar staff, I usually tip like I would in the US, $1-2 per round of drinks.

  • We tip.

Usually $2/night for housekeeping, $2/3 for every two rounds of drinks from a cocktail waitress and $1 per trip to the bar; meals we tipped the waiter $3-5 for anything with a sit-down menu

  • We usually leave our tips for housekeeping staff on a day to day basis, except arrival and departure dates - that way whoever is cleaning your room the day you leave doesn't get your entire tip (what if the regular h/k was off that day). We've always gotten good maid service this way.
  • I think the general feel at the AI we visit is that tipping is not expected, but appreciated. With that mentality, I find it easier to tip, than say, when people expect/assume you should tip x amount. It's a nice change. We tip a couple dollars here and there for bartenders, waiters and housekeeping.
  • I like to tip the housekeeping staff after my first night, then again at the end (I usually stay 3-4 nights).  I always get good service.  I think it helps to show them a little appreciation in advance.  At one AI after I tipped the first day they ended up decorating the room with flower petals, etc.

    I agree with this.

However, we went to Sandals with group, and there was one woman that took amazing care of us. It was unbelievable. At the end of the trip we wanted to tip her, and she refused - said no, I can't accept anything, I will get fired, etc etc. So of course we didn't want her to get fired, so we put money in a a card in an envelope and gave it to her when we left. She was so awesome, that we wanted to find a way to give her something under the management radar because she went way above and beyond. Kudos to Sandals Antigua!

This is about what we did ;-)

  • We tip as we go, usually we tip the bartenders well at the beginning and they will remember u the rest of the stay. Same goes for maids. Waiters are on individual basis as they always change, we usually tip if they stop to say hi and we get to know them a bit. We also bring a few things from home to say thanks, such as stickers, canadian key chains, fishing items, hair accesories etc
