Pricing clothes for garage sale?

I plan on participating in our upcoming community wide garage sale, but I need some help pricing clothes. For the cheaper brands like old navy, target, ect. I plan on pricing most things at maybe $2.00, maybe $1 or less for tee shirts. Its the nicer stuff that I'm having a hard time with, business wear from stores like BR, j crew and Ann taylor. I know most garage sale shoppers are looking for dirt cheap things, but I would rather give the nicer stuff to someone I know then sell it for next to nothing. How would you price blazers, dress shirts, suits, outerwear, dresses? All of it is in good condition (some even still has tags) or is in dry cleaning bags perfectly pressed. Most of my stuff is from maybe 3-4 yrs ago but is pretty classic in style.

Re: Pricing clothes for garage sale?

  • A friend of mine had a garage sale and priced all of her clothes $5 & up for the nicer things. She made sure they were presented well (washed, ironed if needed and hung on a rack to themselves). I've also stopped by a sale where the lady had some ridiculous prices on things that still had tags on them. She was asking more than the store they came from! I recognized the tags and knew she probably picked them up super cheap on clearance and was trying to get a retail value for them at a yard sale. I asked to buy something at a discount and she told me no, that she could get that for them on ebay! Anyway, my point being, It never hurts to price higher first and go down within the hour if no one shows interest. But I don't think you should have a problem if you reasonably price them for more than the cheaper clothes.

  • We just had a company wide garage sale here at work and the nice stuff was priced at $5-$10 depending on if it was. We had a bunch of stuff in dry cleaning bags and it was all $10.  Most of it was left at the end of the day and it got slashed 50%.

  • Ugh :(

I'll probably price high $10-15 and plan on giving most of it to friends/relatives. Because what's  the point of selling nice stuff for five bucks a piece, kwim.

  • Are you opposed to ebay?

It takes a few minutes to take pictures, put the listings together, etc., but as long as you charge enough for shipping you'll get more for it there, especially if it's still got tags. I've had very good luck selling clothes there.

Otherwise I'd try a consignment store or just give it away to a friend or family. If you put it out at a garage sale people will offer you $1 an item all day long.
