Interview - Collared Shirt? Sleeves?

I'm sure this question has been answered on here somewhere, but I can't discover where, so I hope everyone will humor me and let me know, since the interview is Friday!

Due to DH's career necessitating a move to a different city (my home town, as it turns out), I've applied for a job at one of the agencies that represents the claimants that file with my current agency, so it's a similar field. I secured an interview on Friday, and while I would never wear jeans (my current office's dress code), I'm having trouble with a few questions on the business formal front.  I know that this is the dress code for the interview, as it was mentioned in a confirmation email to me after my phone interview.

Many of the women's clothing websites I've gone on suggest that a suit with a simple sleeveless blouse underneath is appropriate - you wouldn't know the shirts were sleeveless unless you looked them up on the website or the model took her jacket off. Some websites suggest that a button up collared shirt with long sleeves is a must, while others suggest that a crisp clean shirt that doesn't show any cleavage is appropriate.

Frankly, I don't have any long sleeved button shirts that don't pucker at the cleavage (thank you, newlywed 9, ugh), and the idea of wearing a long sleeve shirt and long sleeved suit jacket sounds like a great way to be sweating profusely in the 80 degree, high humidity heat of the South. I do have two sleeveless blouses that show no cleavage - one with buttons, one without - to wear with my black skirt suit, but I'm starting to doubt this is appropriate given some of the business websites. Otherwise, I've got hose, black heels, and some tasteful jewelry all lined up.

Any insights on the blouse front? Do I need to go shopping, or can I rock what I have?

  • Don't overthink it. Rock what you have. I haven't worn a LS button-down top with a suit since 2005

Sounds fine to me. I never wear a LS button down. Even when I am at my ideal weight I'm too big in the chest area to wear a button down with out pucker issues.

  • Thanks! I'm glad this seems par for the course, and i really appreciate everyone's input!
  • Something like a shell top under a jacket looks fine.

Not to mention a shirt with long sleeves adds bulk. And yeah, it's also much too warm.
  • I just had an interview (and a job offer!) and wore a one button suit with a colorful blouse tank underneath.  With the tank tucked it, it looked really good (IMHO).
  • I can't do the button down with a suit jacket either. Boobs + biceps + wide(ish) shoulders just make me look and feel like Big Girl in a Little Coat (and I'm not really big)!

I usually pair my jacket with a cotton woven top with a turtleneck collar (Ann Taylor). If they can't see it, it doesn't matter. I've even worn a jacket to my interview with *gasp* only a tank top underneath. If they can't really see your sleeves (or lack of), meh, who cares.

  • I have a shell that has short sleeves and is not too sheer and another with long sleeves.  I prefer to wear those so if something happens I can take my jacket off.  Like if it is the middle of the summer and sweltering hot, I will take my jaket off while travelling to and from the interview.  Or in another case, the company had me take a test, and the room was super hot, so I took my jacket off while taking the test.  But no need to wear a long sleeve button shirt.

I think your blouses sound fine.

  • I've seen camisoles recommended, the kind high enough not to show cleavage, under a suit for an interview. So, you're blouses sound very appropriate!

    This!

I think most women wear sleeveless tops under their jackets.  I only wore sleeves if I knew I'd be taking my jacket off.  But if I knew it would be on, I wore sleeveless.

Trust me- NO ONE is going to be analyzing your top and going out and searching to find if it's sleeveless or not!
