How many paint colors are in your house?

I'm not so concerned with the different shades (e.g., Vivid Violet, Power Purple), but the colors themselves (e.g., Beige, Gray, Red, etc.).

I'm still trying to pick paint colors for the house and I'm still at the same place I've been for weeks.  Painting the whole house in different shades of the same color seems repetitive, but I don't want a Rainbow Bright house either.

I suck at paint commitment.

This is my siggy.

Re: How many paint colors are in your house?

  • 6, including white trim and the godawful bathroom I hate but H thinks is fine. I have a light sky blue, a couple different beiges, gray, a beige-y yellow in the kitchen and green for the fug.  I hated the kitchen at first, but the living room area is gray, and it's a semi-open floor plan, so it's kind of yellow on gray which is super hot right now.  The blue is on Joaquin's ceiling and is super light.

We went for mostly neutrals because you can layer in colors in textiles and decor without having it be too overwhelming.

  • Lots. I love color. Every room is different. Living room is blue, bedroom is tan, K's room is green, dining room is yellow, kitchen is green, and the computer room is all red, white, and blue with nothing but Minnesota Twins stuff all over it. I love, love, love color.

However, it works in our house because we don't have many shared walls between rooms. I know at my parents' house, their dining room, living room, and den all come together, so my mom's always had to be careful to blend colors together so she doesn't have a bunch of non-matching colors coming together in one spot.

Got any samples or ideas you want me to look at? I'm pretty good at picking out colors. I come from a family of artists. :)

    Oh, FFS.
  • RIght now, 6 different colors. It would be more, but we still have FIVE rooms of wallpaper. By mid-June, all that will be painted. We have a lot of blues and grays in our house. That's what we both like, and I don't see the point of using something else just for the sake of using a different color.

Unless they've come up with a miracle wallpaper remover, I feel very, very, very sorry for you having to take it all down. When I was a kid, our family of four spent a weekend taking down wallpaper in the living room and kitchen from the early 70s.

To this day, I'm still shocked that my parents didn't wind up divorced, and no one was murdered after that tedious weekend.

    Oh, FFS.
  • Well, originally we were going to keep the colors the previous owners had except for a few rooms that were painted neon colors.  They had a similar "style" to mine.  But, the more we've lived there, the more we've realized we're going to paint every room - either because of a color choice or because they did a schit job at painting.

It's a center hall Colonial, so the rooms are pretty closed off from one another but I still want some "flow".  I've been concentrating on greens, blues, and beiges/grays to give it a beachy feel, but it's gotten to feel repetitive across rooms.  We have a grand total of 14 rooms to paint (yeah, I know) and only four are done.  The foyer/upstairs hallway is a light gray, the living room is a sagey green, and the dining room is a brownish greige. The kitchen will definitely be a light blue and the family room will definitely be a medium brown.  After that, I'm stumped.

The colors you have already chosen sound nice. What other rooms are you debating about? Just bedrooms?

  • If you want a splash of color, do you have a room to do that flows next to any of the rooms that'll be in the browns? You could try a pop of maroon on one wall to get away from the greens/blues you feel are repetitive. Match it with a tan in the same family (either warm or cool) for the rest of the room (which will still flow with the browns, and greens) and you'll get a splash of color while still flowing with the rest of the house.

4 bedrooms, 3 baths, and a utility room.  Hopefully my math adds up there.  All the bedrooms are upstairs, and 2 of the baths.  The utility room is off the family room, and the half bath is off the utility room.

We have painters showing up in a week to paint the bathrooms.  So, no pressure or anything.

I have a Rainbow Brite house... and it's not even done.

Dining room is purple with cream and bright white trim

Kitchen is yellow (for now) with charcoal and cream trim

Living room is olive green with bright white and deep red trim

Bedroom is dark peacock blue with bright white and cream trim

Bathroom is chocolate brown at top and a mustardy- gold on the bottom (with cream trim)

Hallway is cafe au lait color with black and bright white trim

Craft room will be terra cotta orange

Guest bedroom WAS going to be sage green but I think we're going to paint our kitchen that color.

So, when it's done--- 8.  8 rooms in my house... 8 different colors :)

What rooms (and add the colors so I don't have to scroll back up, lol) are the downstairs bathroom off of?

As for upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms, I truly believe those are private spaces that should be personalized by the occupant with no need to worry about being cohesive with the main living space.

Edit: Is the utility room just water heater and such or is it more of a laundry area?

The finished part of the basement is gray.

    The living room is yellow.

The kitchen is a brownish-gray color.

The dining room is the same as the kitchen, but with a dark you-can-barely-tell-its-green under the chair rail.

    The powder room is green.

The hall/stairwell is a neutral stone color. All of the closet interiors are the same color.

    Our bedroom is light green.

    DS's room is purpely-blue.

The bathroom upstairs is gross. It needs to be ripped out and re-done... that's a project for this winter. But it will be a different color than any other room in the house when we're finished.

All of the woodwork in the house (trim, moldings and doors) is bright white. Same as the ceilings.

  • 7 (soon to be 8, once we paint the basement.)
  • 8 though I really want to change most of them up.

  • We have 2 right now but are about to have 5.

The living room, hall and dining room are a yellowy-beige and the rest is white right now. We're painting our bedroom a smokey blue shade. Lea's room will be a light green. And the bathroom will be medium moss green. The kitchen is staying white because it seems like a PITA to re-paint and we're hoping to sell soon anyway (the other rooms have to be re-painted though).

  • 3. The entire house, which we bought 3 years ago, is builder beige with cream trim, except for our dreamy all white bathroom.

I have issues with commitment to color. I'm afraid of picking a paint color and immediately changing my mind, so I do nothing, and add my color with decor.

  • Sorry, I got pulled into a meeting. The downstairs bath is only off the utility room. It contains the laundry area and a mud room area. If you stand in the dining room, you can look straight through the kitchen, family room, utility room, and the half bath. Because of that I feel like the colors should be harmonious. I plan to paint the backs of the family room's bookcases with the kitchen blue.

If it helps, the dining room is Benjamin Moore Annapolis Gray (which I think is discontinued), the kitchen will be something similar to Benjamin Moore Smoke, and the family room will be something similar to Sherwin Williams Latte.

The upstairs guest bath is off the hallway (Benjamin Moore Hazy Skies) and the master bath is off the master bedroom. The master bedroom color is yet to be determined. I'm leaning towards Valspar Frosty Grass for a bathroom, but I don't know which one.  Eventually the master bathroom will be gutted, but that's a ways away. I can't live with neon orange for that long.

    This is my siggy.
  • 5.  Downstairs is mostly 1 color since it's so open/flows.
  • When I bought the house, it was the same beige walls with trim.

Now, the living room is a light gray with white trim.

P's room is bright blue with bright green trim. It works really well and I have received a lot of compliments on it. I might have pictures somewhere.

My bedroom will be green. Still deciding on which shade.

    Bathroom will be light blue

Office will be the same color as the living room I think

Kitchen and Dining will be green as well.

  • 6 different colors.  Two of the colors are in rooms/areas that we haven't painted yet since moving in 2 yrs ago.

The trim throughout the house is a color by Sherwin Williams called Creamy.  It's and off white, but looks more white than anything. We have that really nice wide notched wood trim throughout the house and around the windows.

Kitchen:  Celery green (we have pea green counter tops, so we didn't have a lot of options, but I think I would pick this color even if we get different counter tops.)

Living room and hallway:  A really light milk chocolate brown/tan.  Looks pretty with the creamy trim.

Master bedroom is a very, very pale yellow.   It's really neutral and looks fresh and clean.

Main bath:  The same creamy color as the trim since 3/4 of the wall is 50's peachy pink tile (blech).

Downstair's spare bedroom is an ugly taupe color.  Ceiling and walls are the same color and it's way too dark.  This is the color it was when we bought it.  FI wants to paint it a light grey.  I would like to paint it a pale aqua.

Upstairs, including walls along stairway, are a dirty cream color. Probably hasn't been painted since the 60's.  We are probably going to paint this the same color as the master bedroom (the really pale yellow) with the creamy color on the angled walls/ceiling.  We have dormers upstairs, so the contrast will look nice.  This is currently where DS has his desk and workout equipment.

DS's room is upstairs and the walls and ceiling are a knotty pine paneling.

DS's bathroom is a bright sky blue with creamy ceiling/walls.  The house is a Cape Cod, so the walls/ceilings are angled.

  • I would paint the utility area and bathroom all the same color. Just to make it easier. You mentioned a beach theme, so I tried to go off of that and I only focused on the main floor:

     image

I looked up the colors you gave me and hopefully I found accurate representations. I was trying for more of a "beach glass" theme with sea greens and yellows, to give more range of color then just blues and greys.

I lined up the colors to for the site from the dining room to the bathroom, to see how it flows and then gave some color suggestions. I did find the color you were thinking of for the kitchen is "moody" (compared to the more beachy colors I was thinking of), so I suggested two other blues for the kitchen. The dinning room and family room colors are very neutral and easy to work with.

I am no expert at this by any means and it won't hurt my feelings if you don't like any of the colors. I just hope I gave you some inspiration :)
