Funky knee... tell me it's taper madness?

Since Monday evening my left knee has felt a little off. Not painful, but not normal. Almost like there's a little "hitch" in it when I bend or stand a certain way (with most of my weight on that leg). Going downstairs is a little awkward.

I ran 5mi on Tuesday, and it felt ok, but I haven't run since. My half is Sunday, with a full two weeks after that.

How would you proceed in this case?

Re: Funky knee... tell me it's taper madness?

  • Well, I would definitely not run anymore until your half.

After that, I would just kind of wait and see how it feels.

Not even the easy 3 followed by hot yoga I was planning for tomorrow? Crying

  • This is pretty normal for me during a taper. I never put a half that I'm going to want to race that close to a full...but as long as it's not painful and isn't affecting the way you run, I'd try not to worry about it too much. This was in an article regarding marathon tapering:

Don't be surprised if you feel some new aches and pains during the tapering period. It's a normal part of the process, as your body repairs itself from months of training.

I would JUST do the hot yoga and see if that helps. Test it out the following day with an easy 3. For me, I'd want to see if it's a legit issue BEFORE the half. If it is...don't run the half.

I'd say go for the hot yoga, that should be okay :)

    I agree with this completely.

This is probably what I would do, too. FWIW, I had a hip "thing" happen on my 20-miler a few weeks ago. I took a week off from running, then was able to do a 15 with no noticeable loss in fitness the next Saturday.

  • It sounds exactly like what I had happen to me about a month ago. No pain, but my knee would pop or be really loud if I was walking down a flight of stairs. I went to my doc and she said it's because my quads and hamstrings were really tight pulling on the patella tendon.

I paid extra attention to foam rolling the area right down to the knee cap and made sure to massage out the patella tendon a bit. It loosened everything up and the weird feeling is gone and my knee is tracking properly now.

    Worth a shot?
