A question from the fashion-challenged.

Is cocktail attire standard across locations?

I need to find a dress for a wedding in Key West in a few weeks; cocktail attire is requested.  It is at the Casa Marina at 6:30pm.  Some of the cocktail dresses I am finding online aren't screaming beach wedding; they are screaming boring indoor/work cocktail party.

PIPs or links for appropriate attire greatly appreciated.  I'm missing the gene that likes shopping for clothing and shoes.  Crying

Re: A question from the fashion-challenged.

  • I do think there is a difference. I'd probably go for something brightly colored.

I'm going to a beach wedding in Ft. Lauderdale next month and some of the girls here posted some really nice options: http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/64579703.aspx

Unfortunately, for me, I tried some of the dresses posted and/or similar styles and they just weren't fitting properly or flattering to my figure, so I ended up getting this dress from Zara. It's cotton, but I think with the right accessories it won't look too casual.

Anyway, hopefully that will give you some ideas.

  • I didn't read the other thread, but I agree about something colorful, which should be easy to find this season. I'm picturing a short silk dress from J Crew or similar. They have some with fuller skirts on some dresses right now that are very cute. I'd do a dressy flat sandal or wedge.

Thanks!  That post does give me some good ideas and I'm going to try hard to get something bright/fun-colored.  3/4 of my closet is black, gray and white--I just can't help it!

I think I will look for a fuller skirt in hopes it will be cooler.  I'm afraid of sweating to death in the Key West sun even though I've never been!

  • You could even do a basic maxi dress and jazz it up with some great shoes and accessories.

I went to an outdoor wedding in Key West last summer and did this.
