Loved Costa Rica - how does Belize compare?

I loved the wildlife, scenery and friendly locals in Costa Rica. How does Belize compare?  What areas in Belize did you like?   We are looking at going in mid November.

Re: Loved Costa Rica - how does Belize compare?

  • I have only been to Belize, so I can't compare. I will say that Dh and I loved Belize. We found locals to be friendly on the Cayes and in Hopkins. Loved Caye Caulker for the laid back atmosphere and quiet. Ambergris Caye had more happening, fun, party atmosphere. Most authentic experience would be gained in Dangriga and Hopkins. San Ignacio has a more "city" feel and just a jumping off point for jungle and ruins tours. Bonus: everyone speaks English.

Scenery was great. We took local buses through the country and saw a lot of beautiful places- jungle tours, cave tubing, Mayan ruins. Not much wildlife. There used to be monkeys everywhere in the jungle, but they are scarce now. We did see some cool animals at the zoo though. We dive, so we saw mostly aquatic life. The diving was great!

Prices were super. Loved the food! Best part....everything is unique. They do not allow foreign held companies, so you will not see McDs or Marriotts or anything like that.

  • We went to Belize for our honeymoon and then 9 months later we went to Costa Rica. I loved both experiences, but for different reasons.

In Belize, we split our time in the Cayo region - we spent our time hiking Mayan ruins .. the ATM is a must, cave tubing, zip-lining .. which was much better in Costa Rica. The other half we were in Ambergris Caye - snorkling around the reef which is just amazing (we were able to pet a nurse shark), exploring the town and eating the local foods.

In Costa Rica, we only went to Arenal but I've been told the beaches in Costa Rica are better than they are in Belize .. since the waves break on the reef instead of the beach, the water near the beach is filled with sea grass. This was the case in Ambergris Caye.

I've been to Belize 3 times and CR twice. In Belize we went to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker with a couple day trips to the mainland. In CR we went to Arenal, Montezuma and Manuel Antonio. The cayes have that "Corona commercial" feel- blue water, palm trees, white sand but like a PP mentioned, due to the coral reef, there really aren't wide stretches of sandy beaches.  There are a few places where you can swim off a dock, though and I think I've seen some places that rake up the seaweed but the water is very shallow till you get past the reef. From what I can remember (and I could be wrong) Belize lacks the gorgeous mountains of the central region of CR. But you do have Mayan ruins, an extensive system of underground caves you can tube through, outstanding snorkeling. For me, I liked Belize better than CR. If I could do a trip of CR's hot springs and volcanoes and Belize's cayes, I'd be a happy traveler.
