I am overweight and out of shape. I feel intimidated by this board because it seems that it is full of marathon runners and major atheletes, and not anyone who is like me and just starting out in basic fitness.![]()
I started the Couch to 5 k program, and it's going well. I just finished week one and I found I was able to do it, but looking ahead it looks like by week 3 there is a huge jump in what they expect you to be able to run. I keep telling myself to at least try it when I get there, but I just can't see my 200 pound self being able to run for 20 minutes straight in a few weeks when right now I am burning after 1 minute.
Has anyone done this program and have any encouragement or advice? I have a feeling I will have to repeat some weeks a few times, and that is so discouraging.
Re: Couch to 5 k?
Don't be intimidated!! There's totally a variety of different levels of athletes, & non-athletes on this board! Everyone is super supportive & helpful to everyone else, no matter what their level!
I started C25k last summer & actually graduated the program (
for me Lol). Im running my 1st 5k this weekend (
Haha) When I started the program I considered myself athletic, I was going to the gym 4-5 days a week, walking my dog 1-2x a day...rollerblading, biking, kayaking, waterskiing...I have a variety of different interests & hobbies. But, I also like to drink beer, eat pizza & brats Haha, what can I say, Im from WI! So, even though I was active, running was/is a completely different beast, it was/is SO hard. But, I did it, Im doing it. Which it a huge accomplishment to me, & it is for you too!!
So don't worry too much about week 3, when I read that on the program plan, I felt the exact same way you did! I totally panicked, & I believe my exact words were "20 minutes w/o stopping?!! Wtf?!!!!" Haha. But don't worry, just do the best you can, for the longest you can & if you need to stop, stop. Just keep walking, & try to get running again as soon as you can. & also don't worry about repeating weeks, I had to do that too. Sometimes my schedule just didn't allow me to run 3x a week, or I did & Day 3 seemed just as hard as Day 1, so I'd repeat.
All that matters is that you are doing it!! Thats pretty much the best part about this program being self-paced. The hardest thing about running is taking the 1st step, so once you do that, you can do anything!!
GL!! & don't hesitate to keep posting on this board! Ups, downs, whatever! We're here!
ETA: Oh crap, just saw the dup post...Oh well!
