Is it time for a mom haircut?

I'm debating getting my hair cut short.  I have thick, long naturally wavy hair.  I love my hair when I straighten it, but I don't have time to do it everyday or on the weekends since it takes atleast 30 minutes to dry and straighten.   I don't really like the way my hair looks when I let it air dry. (see pic below)

So this got me thinking, I'm in my early 30's, have 2 kids...is it time to chop my hair off?    I've never had short hair before.

I'm drawn to these hairstyles, but not sure they will work on me:

Re: Is it time for a mom haircut?

  • Can we just call it a short haircut?

    Or an easier haircut?

    ? pwease ?

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • My looks sort of similar. I have found that the shorter it is the more work it requires. When it is longer the weight if my hair makes it lay flatter and not so poufy so I can get by letting it air dry. When it is shorter is gets way too poufy and I have to straighten it.

Another option might be a brazilian blowout, with either you current length or shorter.

Same here - my wavy hair is actually much easier when it's long. I can stretch 2-3 days without washing, so I'm only blow drying every third day. And like pp said, the extra weight helps the waves to lay better. I can wear it wavy when it's shorter, but I feel like that looks frizzier and is prone to being frumpy.

Hairstyles like you posted would probably result in my having to flatiron my hair almost daily.

  • I have a chin-length bob right now.  My hair is fine and straight but I still have to style it every day.  When it was long, I could throw it into a bun wet in the summer and it was so much easier.  Short hair is not always easier...it may take less time to style but it does need to be styled every day.
  • My hair is exactly like yours. Whenever I let it airdry I always feel that it is too big and frizzy.

I recently got a Brazillian Blowout and I am in love. I can now let my hair airdry and my natural waves look much smoother and my hair doesn't get anywhere near as big.  I can also take the time to blow dry it straight and it looks great without having to use a straightner.

I have chopped my hair before like you are thinking about doing and I agree with all the PP that it just made styling much more difficult because I had to do something, at least when it is long you can always pull it up.

  • I just recently went from slightly longer than shoulder length to pretty short and I find that the slightly increased time in styling is made up for with the decreased time in shampooing, rinsing and conditioning.  It takes a long time to get all of the shampoo out of long hair!

I think if you really want something easier you should go shorter but look for a cut that would enhance/use your natural wave rather than something you'd still have to straighten all the time.

  • Short hair is much more work than longer hair. I have hair similar to your and I cut it short (regret!). I can no longer ever leave it wavy and it takes more time to straighten/blow dry.

  • like the others said, short hair requires more work because you CAN'T just throw it into a ponytail or bun like with long hair. I had a chin-length inverse bob 2 years ago that required me to fix it every day. now that my hair is longer, I wash it with shampoo only about every 3 days, and blowdry/flat iron twice a week at most.

personally, I like your hair wavy, it's got a good texture to it.

  • I agree with pps - I think the shorter styles look better straight.  My hair is currently a similar length to yours in the photo you posted, but a couple years ago, I had a cut similar to the one in the second photo you posted.  My hair looks much better long and wavy than short and wavy.

ETA - if you don't like the way your hair looks when wavy, maybe try playing around with it a bit to bring out more of the wave/curl?  Have you tried curl enhancing products and either scrunching or "plopping" it while wet?

  • My hair is about your length but curlier when I air dry.  First, I only wash my hair twice a week.  I think that's key to long, wavy hair.  Your hair will be healthier, and you only have it style it twice a week.  30 minutes drying and flat ironing isn't so bad just twice a week.  If you air dry it, use a curling product (I like Living Proof) and "plop" in in a T-shirt (look for this technique on YouTube).  You might like the curl better.  Also, I recommend using a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, it's made my curly hair less frizzy.

I agree that short hair can be more work.  A shoulder length bob might take some of the weight out of your hair and make your waves more wavy, and I think that would look pretty.

  • You've taken your picture down, so I have no comment about the most flattering look for you.  However, I did want to throw out there that my hair is much easier to style when it's short.  I have a different hair type, though - fine with just a bit of natural wave (not the pretty kind that I can leave wavy).  With short (chin to shoulder length) hair, I can quickly blow dry with a round brush and I'm done, or if I want it very straight I can use a flat iron - but it doesn't take long.  With long hair, I have to do a lot more to style it or else there are spots that frizz and it looks flat on the top.

I think you should cut it off and see.  If your hair is long and thick, it certainly will be quicker to dry and flat iron than it is now.  Also, when my hair is longer, if I find myself wearing a ponytail every single day, then I believe it's time to chop it off.  What's the point of long hair if you stick it in a ponytail every day?  Plus, it's typically not a look that I think a person should do daily.  Cutting my hair forces me to spend the 5 minutes that it takes to style my hair when short.

It's just hair.  Cut it and see if you like it. If you don't, it will grow back.

I have fine hair as well- just a lot of it!  So I do wonder if it'd be a lot quicker to style it if it's shorter (in which case, I'd wear it straight a lot more often!).    30 minutes doesn't sound like a good amount to spend on your hair in the morning, but I already get up at 5am (earlier when my dh is out of town) and I'd rather squeeze in a workout a few times a week than fix my hair!

  • Those haircuts are not even close to what I was picturing when I saw the title.

If you want to try one of those cuts, go for it. If you hate it it will grow back out so quickly that you won't have to bother with it for long.

  • You sound EXACTLY like me 2 years ago, and i went for it and regretted it every single say. It wasnt really that much easier to maintain shorter. I still had to blow dry and straighten. It took maybe 10 mins less, which wasnt worth it for me. I felt much more confident with longer hair and now i only wash, blow dry, flat iron 3 times a week. If you do do it, I would go with the Jessica simpson style. That way if you dont love it, it will grow out easily. GL!
