If your GYNO/OB was 30 plus minutes away and you really loved her but had the option of switching to a GYNO/OB who was closer to home with a hospital to delivery at that had world class surgeons and a top rated neonatal unit would you switch?
We aren't having a baby anytime soon and I love my GYNO but I'm thinking that maybe I should switch. The hospital my GYNO delivers at is 30 to 45 minutes away in traffic But the other hospital is literally down the street and is UCD Med center for those of you who know where we are.
E says I should just stay with my Dr. until we decide to TTC and then switch if I want to. But I would rather just make the switch now if I was going to switch.
Thoughts?
Re: S/O BC and Women's health
I think that is up to you and what you are comfortable with. If you want to just switch now and get it done, I say go for it.
Why does your H want you to wait?
I think he thinks that since I like her so much its easier to just stay with her for now and then if we decide that I need to see someone closer to home then I would switch then. I just like Dr. J so so much. Ugh I think I'm just going to stay where I am. Thanks B.
I would stay with the gyno I loved. It's really important to me to have a gyno I feel comfortable with, especially when it comes to pregnancy and birth. I really have to trust that person, especially after my experience delivering DS. It wasn't anything traumatic, but I had never met the woman before and she wasn't good at listening to DH and me.
The only way I'd consider switching in your circumstance would be if I found out during a pregnancy that the baby would need the higher level NICU. I understand that emergencies happen and babies can need NICUs with no warning, but the likelihood of having some sort of catastrophic emergency that the doctors at the other hospital couldn't stabilize and evac is so, so, so small. It's not worth it to me, unless of course I knew that I'd be 110% comfortable with the new OB.
Also, especially for a first time mom, 30-45 minutes to the hospital is not that long. Unless you wait until you're crowning to get in the car you will most likely not deliver anywhere near that fast for a first time delivery. It will be a very uncomfortable car ride, but again, that's worth it to me to have a great OB that I'm comfortable with.
ETA: But take my perspective with a grain of salt. It comes from a lady who is planning on using a home birth midwife who has to drive 3.5 hours to get to my house for my next pregnancy and birth. I'm far more comfortable with distance than I am with doctors I don't trust.
Thank you. This helps a lot. A big push for switching is my primary because he is part of one health system here and my gyno is part of another and he keeps trying to push me to switch. I think I'll just stay where I am, as I too didn't think 30 to 45 mins was too far to go.
Thanks everyone.
I would stick with the doc I already love. The drive really isn't that far. Even with my fourth delivery, I was at the hospital for 6 hours before the baby was born.
The NICU thing wouldn't bother me much either. It is obviously not far from the bigger NICU and transport wouldn't be a big deal if it were necessary. As far as I'm concerned, having a doctor I know and trust is far more important to me than the distance to the hospital or the NICU.
