S/o to race weekend: What to eat the night before a race?
Sorry, I know this probably gets asked a lot!
Im running my very 1st 5k tomorrow & am just wondering if there's something "special" I should be eating tonight in preparation??
I swam competitively in HS, & back then we used to carb load the night before.....big ole pasta feeds, does the same principle apply to running races??
TIA!

Re: S/o to race weekend: What to eat the night before a race?
First off, congrats on doing your first 5K, how exciting!
Second, it's not necessary to carb load for a 5k, it's just not long enough for that. You can have carbs, sure, but no need to go overboard. I usually just eat something w/ carbs that I know won't bother my stomach. I try to stay away from high fat foods or those with a lot of fiber in in them.
My go to pre-race dinner is usually just plain cheese pizza. (I do try to soak up as much grease as I can off the top with a napkin though) It's always worked well for me.
My number one rule is to not introduce new foods the night prior to a race.
Like the PP I like pizza prior to a race, but everyone is different. My DH likes Panera, personally I try and avoid too much lettuce the day before a race. It can lead to bathroom issues on a long run for me.
Congrats on your first race! Have fun!
I'm also in the "nothing new" camp. The last 5K I raced, I had a shiit ton of cheese and beer the night before (hey! I was in Wisconsin!), so I'm not sure I'm the best advice giver. I've done burgers, pizza...but nothing spicy.
Yes,I'm smiling...I'm a marathoner!

Thanks everyone! I knew it wasn't necessary to eat as much as I did for swimming, since a 5k is clearly not as difficult as the swimming was.
& haha;
I AM from WI!! Typical Fri night dining for us is pizza & beer anyways!
you don't need to carbo load before a 5K.
I'm surprised at all these pre-race pizza eaters though. pizza is no beuno for this girl's belly.
but I do like to have a (generous) glass of red wine the night before a race.
so, moral of the story OP: it's different for everyone. I tend to consume a bit more carbs pre-race but that's usually because I'm sticking to something bland that I know won't upset my stomach.
