Question about overnight visitation

Do you guys pack up a suitcase for your little one each time there is an overnight visitation or do they have a second set of clothes, etc. at the other house?

Re: Question about overnight visitation

  • I guress it depends on the circumstances.  XH doesn't have overnight visits but even if he did I would imagine it wouldn't be often enough for XH to have a whole set of clothes for him.  I'd probably pack him a bag to make sure he had everything he needed.

PIP would probably be able to answer this.  Her XH has EOW.

  • No, I don't pack anything for DS.

XH picks him up from daycare on Friday (of his weekend), takes his backpack from daycare with him (only contains his nap blanket, a lovey and a spare set of clothes). He returns the backpack (generally untouched) when I pick up DS on Sunday.

XH provides everything for him for his weekends -- the few times I've sent DS in one of my oufits either 1) I never saw it again or 2) I had to remind XH several times to return it. Now what I do is put DS in the outfit he came home in the prior Sunday. This way XH gets him in one of his outfits and returns him in one of his outfits.

There was a whole dicussion on this one the Blended Families board -- some aruged that if the NCP (non-custodial parent) is paying CS, why should they have to provide their own clothes as well? My argument is that my XH's CS barely covers half of daycare expenses -- it doesn't even touch the clothes, food, shelter, diapers/wipes, insurance, etc. that I pay for DS.

Unless you think your X would be good about returning your items, I would suggest that you let him provide for your LO during their time with them. That being said, if your LO has a lovey or blankie or other favorite toy that is comforting to them, I would probably send that.

ETA: My XH gets hand-me-downs from XSIL who has a son that is a year older than DS -- all of the clothes are the right season for his size, so it's perfect. That's part of why I don't send clothes, because I know he's getting free ones.

  • I am too nice!  I pack enough clothes for the weekend when he goes to his father for the weekend.

However, since ex wasn?t exactly good about bringing all the stuff back and leaves me with the dirty clothes, he sees how this is not working out.  He actually went and got some clothes and shoes for ds for his place.  He likes the convenience of not caring around a big bag when he comes to pick-up ds.

I think it helped that I packed ds stuff in a very girly and flowery bag and I am guessing he didn't want to be seen wearing that haha!

  • No. XH has his own set of things for P. It actually is in our decree that he provide his own things for him. However, say P has a favorite stuffed animal at my house, we cannot keep him from taking it to the other parent's house.
  • Our arrangement is similar to PIP. He has clothes, toys, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. at my house and dad's house. The only thing he doesn't have two of is his soccer or baseball uniform and gear. On ex's weekends, when he drops him off with me on Sunday night, he generally brings that back to me so I have it for the next weekend when I need to bring him to the game.
  • We each have enough stuff for the kids, including DS special blanket (obviously he's not too picky). I try to send them to his house in his clothes but that usually never works out because the kids want to pick our their clothes. Instead during pickup/drop off we usually exchange a bag with things that belong at the other house.

    This for me too!

  • It really depends but the short answer is most of time I pack a bag with clothes.

  • Thanks everyone, its the first one so I am a little nervous.

I packed a suitcase for the kids (STBX doesn't have a place to live yet, so they are going to his parent's), the diaper bag, the kids each packed a little suitcase for their blankets and stuffed animals and the pack and play.  I left this all in the daycare office, I hope this isn't going to be the norm!

  • I have to say before Ella started school and she was just in daycare, I would always send the suitcase.

  • I don't have kids, but F maintains his own clothes for his daughter. The only thing that's packed in her backpack is a sweater or jacket, dress up clothes the daughter wanted to bring and an outfit if her mother has something specific she needs her to be wearing on her pickup day. Other than that, the only other thing that is sent is really specific types of clothes (like rain coat and boots) since it doesn't make sense to have those at both houses.

As far as exchange day clothes go, she'll usually send the daughter to F in an outfit that belongs to him (one worn on a previous exchange day) after it's been laundered and he'll do the same.

  • I think it depends on the frequency of visitation. DS sees X regularly so he has a set of everything for his house. Things go between houses regularly so occasionally we will pack a small bag to send back to the others house. For example, I somehow ended up with all of DS hats. No clue how. I sent 2 back with DS to X's house. We don't have particular things that stay at our respective homes except for toys and that's just because who wants to pack up a bunch of toys all the time. DS certainly takes a smaller toy with him from one house to the other. He has some things (like one particular stuffed animal) that he has two identical ones at each house so we don't have to worry about him losing or forgetting it.
