False negative pregnancy test?
DH and I have been TTC for the past 7 months. I'm very regular and track everything so that I know when I'm ovulating, should be starting my favorite time of the month and such. I'm almost a week late and am a bit confused. I took a pregnancy test two days ago but it was negative. Is it possible for a pregnancy test to come back negative if you're actually pregnant? I'm trying not to WebMD diagnose myself, but I have other symptoms as well (nausea, sensitivity to smell, being tired ALL the time, etc). Am I just sick? I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but how long should I wait before contacting my MD to see if something else is up?
Re: False negative pregnancy test?
When you say tracking your cycles are you just using an app, or are you actually temping (at the same time every day)?
To answer your question yes you can have a false neg, but that only means you do not have enough HCG in your system. If you do not have your period in a week test again.
Also you can trick your body into thinking its pregnant and causing your period to be delayed.
False negatives can happen, especially at the early days of pregnancy.
I'd get another test and try it tomorrow morning. Good luck!
Okay, thanks!
How are you tracking ovulation? It's entirely possible that this cycle your body geared up to O (EWCM, + on an OPK) and then just didn't. Without temping you can't say for sure if you O'd or not.
Generally there's no need to be concerned until you've missed 2 periods. If you want to, keep testing (pink dye test, not blue, blue can give a false +ve evap line) until you either get AF or miss another.
GL!
Also, I highly recommend temping. It's really quite easy to do, and gives you a lot more insight into what your body is actually doing. The tutorials at FertilityFriend.com are great, I also recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility.
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
I would recommend getting the book Taking Charge of your fertility and start taking your temp. Your body can show signs of ovulation but you could ovulate earlier or later than what you think, or not at all. Temping will show the temp shift to confirm ovulation.
Like I stated before if you do not have your period in a week test again, but the more you stress the harder it will be.
I've been using ovulation kits, but I suppose you're right in that they aren't actually 100% effective. Thanks for the recommendations though! I've been using Fertility Friend for about a year now so I guess I should start using ALL of the features.
It's doubtful that the test is wrong but it is possible you had a late implantation. With my second, I tested two days before my period, got a negative, said, oh well, guess it didn't happen. Tested the morning I was expecting my period and gave birth nine months later
So it's possible you just tested early. And anecdotally, with my first, I tested at 10DPO and got a positive, so when I tested at 12DPO and got a negative, I assumed I wasn't pg. Implantation can occur at really different times for different pregnancies.

Honestly I would save your money on ovulation kits because they are predictions at best because they are detecting the surge and your body can surge for a few days before actually ovulating. FF friend is a great resource, but Taking Charge of your Fertility will really explain things. You would be surprised how many women actually do not know how their body works (not saying that you do not just in general).

I agree that temping is the best way to confirm ovulation yourself, so you may have ovulated later than you think and you may not actually be late yet. (late ovulation will make your period start later than you would normally expect, since our leutal phase tends to remain about the same)
As for your negative test, it's probably accurate, tests are so sensitive now, women are sometimes able to get a + result as early as 8DPO (and much sooner than their period is due)
As for the PP who said that OPK's are a waste of $$ - I disagree. You can get 40 OPK's and 10 pregnancy test strips on Amazon for $10, so they're pretty cheap and last a long time. They're nice to use in conjunction with temping, because sometimes you might get two temp spikes in a month and it's difficult to tell which one was ovulation - but if you have +OPK's prior to one of the temp spikes, it gives you a clearer picture. They also help give you a heads up that ovulation is coming. I've never gotten a +OPK and not ovulated 1-2 days later.
