Question about foreclosures and utilities

If you bought a foreclosure and the utilities were turned off, did the bank turn them back on for the inspection? Should I write a provision for this into my offer? Also, if the bank did turn the utilities on, did they have them shut off again after the inspection? TIA!

Re: Question about foreclosures and utilities

  • The utilities need to be on so they can be inspected-electrical wiring, plumbing, heat and air, etc.  The bank should turn them on, then off after the inspection, and this will happen when your agent contacts their agent.

  • It all depends on the bank.  Some banks refuse to turn on the utilites and its left up to the buyer or the buyer's agent to do it.

  • The bank turned them on through the agent. They also turned them back off after the inspection.

  • we just bought a foreclosure and the agent for the bank that owned the property had the utilities turned on for the inspection. They also paid all utility fees and municipal fees (trash) at the closing
