Heart rate training question also RPE

So I'm trying to train with my HRM. But sometimes I forget to wear it. Last night I had to go to the gym and run on the treadmill because it was so late at night.

Anyway, my goal was to run 6 intervals at a faster speed with a heart rate around 167 ish and then recover down to a 120 heart rate. I was using both RPE and the treadmill HRM (I know not entirley accurate that is why I used RPE as well).

Anyway, right from the get go I felt like my exertion was high even in my slow mile warm-up. My face was super, super red during the intervals and I had to take an extra minute to recover to feel actually recovered! It was a tough workout. What gives? Tired? Just one of "those" workouts"? Late at night (I've been off of work all week, so I feel rested? Treadmill? This is one of my harder weeks for this mesocycle so maybe that is why?

Re: Heart rate training question also RPE

  • You mean perceived rate of exertion, right?

For me, it's always a lot higher when I'm indoors than out.  On my trainer, I can feel like I'm dying and my HR is like, 130.  Same thing for the treadmill.  I think it's because the air is so still and I just sweat a hundred times more indoors and my body temp gets a lot higher that I think I'm working a lot harder than I'm actually working.

  • It's probably just one of those days. I don't train with a HRM often but I'm suprised how fast I can send my heartrate up. I agree with pp that the treadmill can make things seem worse if you're used to running outside.
