So fed up with the spin class situation...

Re: So fed up with the spin class situation...

  • This would be worth a call to a manager, IMO.

Can you call at midnight:01 the night before and leave a message?

    I would be peeved, too.

  • Our Bodypump classes require a reservation as well and open up 2 days in advance.  People actually set an alarm to call in at 5:00 am when the gym opens to get the reservation because they'll likely be closed out if they wait until a normal hour.

Are there any drop in slots?  Our classes reserve most of the slots and then leave a handful for drop-ins.

  • Sounds like they need to offer more classes.

I haven't really heard of a good spin class sign up system.  At my gym, they give out admission tickets 30 minutes before class starts, first come first served.  But for the popular class times, at 30 mins before class, there's already a line formed with as many people as bikes in the class.  The reality is that in order to get in, you have to arrive an hour or so before class starts and just stand in line.  Who has time for that?  And I hate bringing all my spin stuff only to not get in.

I started working out on a trainer at home.  The hassle wasn't worth it.

No drop ins.  I am on the wait-list.  But wait-listers rarely get a bike anyway.

I don't want to have to wake up at 5 just to call the gym... ugh.  That is when the gym opens for us as well.

I might ask to speak to a manager next week.

  • That really sucks.  I think talking to a manager or setting your alarm to call in when they open are your only options.  I know my college gym did online sign ups for classes and you had to be online when some of them came available or you would be locked out immediately.  It was rough and I wish there was a better system, but I can't think of one.
  • We are first come first serve.  I much prefer that.

  • Lemme guess . . . NYSC?

My NYSC is like that, too. The classes fill up within 5 minutes of the opening reservation time. It's super frustrating.

  • Ugh I feel your pain - I've gone weeks without a spin class because they would give out the tickets 5 minutes earlier than they said they would and they were gone within 2-3 minutes. I almost always show up at 1-2 minutes after they are given out and they are gone. It's such a bummer.

I don't understand why they don't buy more bikes and either have bigger classes or classes more frequently.

Yup!  And I am not even in Manhattan.

  • I go to BSC...same thing for the good instructors.

  • I've had the same problem at three gyms now, so i've just given up.

Me either! I wonder if we're at the same club?

  • Equinox does sign ups through itsiPhone app (or online) and I think it works perfectly.  There are times when the "good" spin class books before 6:00 am but I feel like if I really want to go to class I'll get up in time to reserve and if I don't then someone who wants it more deserves the spot. I infinitely prefer this to what the club I attended before we moved did, the sign up sheet an hour before class. That required getting to the gym early and set to spin without knowing if you'd get a bike. It sucked. At least this way I can plan my schedule around it.

FWIW, short of a good reservation system I am not sure there's any solution.  One class will always be the popular class, it will always be a fight to attend, and more classes won't change the human nature involved with a class being more desirable the more popular it is.
