Decorative house flags...lame? WDYT? PIP

My mom has quite the collection of decorative house flags. You know the ones, some holiday, some seasonal, even a few character ones (snoopy valentines for example). Well she's downsizing to a condo and she asked me if I'd like them for my house. I told her no thanks and I think it kind of made her sad. She has enjoyed collecting them over the years and I think she enjoys selecting which one to display ( she has at least 20). Her neighbor has also told her how her kids look forward to seeing which flag she puts out.

So I was thinking about putting them in our garage sale, but then I got sentimental about the damn flags. Should I just keep them? I have a spot on my house that would work, I just don't know. Are they too lame and grandmotherly?

Here's my house. If I put a flag up it would likely be on the same post as the hanging basket.

Here's an example of the kind of flags I'm talking about. Some of hers are similar.

  • I don't think they're bad. Not exactly my style. But I don't think they're bad. I think you could put one up, it'd be nice. I'd steer clear of snoopy or any other fictional characters though haha but that's just me. The regular, seasonal ones are fine I think!

  • I'd pick a few that you particularly like, and display them sometimes, with a regular American flag out most of the time.

  •      Does your mother have to get rid of the flags? If she truly enjoys the flags she can still display them on a patio or balcony or by the front door; unless the condo association has rules against hanging flags. Maybe she can display the flags in a more public area like the mailboxes with permission from the association. The flags do not seem to take up too much space. She can downsize by limiting the number of furniture pieces or kitchen appliances.

If there is a rule against displaying objects, then I would take a few of the flags that I would hang in her honor when she comes to visit.

  • I llke them.  They don't work for my new house so I've started in on wreaths

  • Several of our neighbors (some young, some older) have them.  They are nms for my own home, but some of them are very pretty or fun and super cute for the kids. They are nice to look at and seem welcoming.

There are some that are kind of lame and/or 'old lady' though....my mom wouldn't like them, and she is an old lady.lol

  • I used to have the large ones on my old house.  The previous owners had a pole so I just started buying flags. Then we got new siding and I never put a new pole up.  I sold all my flags on Craigslist.  But, I did like the idea of having flags so I got the smaller ones (called garden flags I think) and I put those out now.

  • I don't like them, but I don't think they are tacky they are just not my style. A lot of people around here have them - usually people who have a lot of country decor. My friend has one and loves it, it's just not my thing.

Could you hang it somewhere and just use an american flag? That always looks nice.

  • Meh. They always make me a think of women who wear appliqued sweatshirts. They're not horrible, but they raise my eyebrows a bit and I would never have one on my own home. If you want to hang them (do you?), how about picking out a few of the classier ones and using those?

  • What about offering them to the neighbor whose kids like to see them?

They are NMS, but they are so commonplace around here that I would not even take a 2nd glance if I were to see one.  I prefer the American flag.

  • I inherited my grandmom's garden flag collection.  She had one for every season and holiday.

I like it.  I like opening the packages and smelling her.  I like coming home and seeing the flag by the door and thinking about her.  I'm very sentimental,

  • My ILs have a horrible flag addiction that they passed to DH.  I am down with the American flag and one decorative, but they have at least 20 in their small front yard. When we met, DH had at least 10.  We compromised to one decorative, one large American flag and one smaller American flag. If I had it my way, all of the decorative ones would get tossed, but I'm speaking as a woman traumatized by the madness of a ton of tacky ones littering the front yard at once

They are totally lame but I love them.

We don't have a flag holder on our house. The HOA probably doesn't approve of decorative flags; I haven't seen homes in our neighborhood that have them, only American flags.

  • I have the small garden flags out front by the garage door.  I use several seasonal ones (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Halloween), and I have generic spring, summmer, winter ones.  I hang a Flag on the appropriate holidays, and months when I can't decide which one to use I will just hang our monogram letter flag.
