Nervous after bad run - where to go from here?

I tried to do my long run for the week today after work and it was a big fail!  I think it was too hot, too sunny, and I was too dehydrated. I was to do 10 and only made 6.  My half is in two weeks and I don't know how to readjust my training plan.  Here was my long run schedule for the last 4 weeks:

10 miles

10 miles

3.1 miles run / 3.1 miles walk

10 miles (only did 6)

I've been averaging an additional 11 miles throughout the week not counting my long runs.  Basically, I don't know whether I should try to do another 10 next week (week before the half), shoot for 8, or just go for 5.

Thoughts?  Opinions?  I hate second guessing myself!

8 next week. You'll be fine. My longest run before my first half was 9 miles and the race was NBD at all. You are running enough. You'll be fine.

  • I agree with 8-9 miles for next weekend, and I definitely think you'll be ok! If this was your only 10 mile and you only made 6 then I'd suggest trying again for the 10. But you've already done several 10 mile runs, so I KNOW you're ready to tackle 13.1. Everyone has a few bad runs, and hot weather can certainly be a factor. Relax and try not to stress. The hard training is already done, and you just need to focus on keeping your legs loose and injury-free the next 2 weeks. GL!

  • Ditto. I only did 10 before my 1st half and survived:)

  • so you've done two 10 milers already?  Aim for 8 next weekend and you'll be okay
  • Just accept it was a bad day and move on. I think my longest run before my first half was 8 miles so you'll be fine!

  • My longest before my first half was 10 and it was an uuuugly 10.  You've already done that, so I'd just chalk it up to a bad run and follow the plan you've already got.  You'll be fine!
