Irish Kindergarden: English Language work?

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with education for five year olds in Ireland? I'm wondering what the kids do in terms of language at that point.

Are they starting to read?
Are they working with both capital and lowercase letters?
Are they spelling?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Irish Kindergarden: English Language work?

  • I've experience of Irish education... but it's a long time since I was five! :-)

But seriously, I can't remember exactly where they're at. My SIL teaches Junior Infants (the first year in proper school) which kids start between the ages of four and five.  But I can't remember what she said. Some would have learnt some letters in Montessori the previous year. From what I do recall is that she had to some of them out of the practice of using all capitals.

Also, one of my godsons is 5 and in that class group (not same school) and I think he can write some letters.

But I can certainly find out some info for you...

Are you thinking of Ireland as a place for you both to work? I know Spain is bad at the moment, but Ireland isn't fantastically better and I know permanent jobs in education are hard to come by. 3 years after qualifying my SIL has her first proper class this year - she spent the last few years as a resource teacher and only part time...

Nope! I'm working with a kid who just got back from Ireland. I figured if there was any place to ask, this was it.

Thank you for your help! :)

EDIT:  Thank you for the websites. They're just what I needed!

  • Glad to of assistance!

Apparently the first 2 years are taken to be one set of targets and some schools progress more slowly than others through the work load
