Help me style this cocktail dress

I am going to an event tonight where I have to wear a cocktail dress.  I bought this one yesterday, in black;

I actually think it looks better in person than it does here.  I'm not quite sure how to style it though?  Just plain black pumps?  Can I wear nylons with something like this, or would that look odd?  I never tan and my legs are terribly pasty white.  I'm guessing it would look nicer if I wore my hair up?  That in and of itself will be a task, as I'm not very good at doing my hair in a formal style!

I appreciate any advice - thanks!

Re: Help me style this cocktail dress

  • I'd skip a necklace because of the neckline.

    As far as nylons - it would depend on the show. If you are doing a closed toe pump, you could do very sheer nylons, but I wouldn't. I'm pasty white, and very rarely wear nylons.

  • I like this dress! I say yes to black pumps, and if you want nylons, go for it! I'd do either silver, black or a pop of color for a bracelet and earrings. If you're not great at styling formal hair, do a low messy bun, maybe add a braid, they're very in and pretty! Depends on your hair length. I don't think you have to go overboard, small details will look classy.

    Thank you :)  I actually overlooked it in the store and my H convinced me to try it on, it was on clearance for $33, so I couldn't argue!

    I like the idea of a low bun - thanks!  My hair is a couple of inches below my shoulders.  I feel like a black closed toe pump would be better than open toes?  I have some silver/black bracelets that would match the beading on the dress, so I think that would look best.

  • I think your accessories sound really pretty.  For hair, check out "Thesmallthingsblog".  She has a TON of hair tutorials that take only a few minutes, some bobby pins and some hairspray.
  • I'd do a statement earring, a cuff bracelet, and a bright or metallic shoe, with a bright or metallic clutch. If you want to cover your legs, you could do a nude fishnet, or another textured tight in nude or black.  Lace tights would be gorgeous with this.

     Honestly, I'd stay away from black shoes.  They will be boring with a black dress.

    A black cocktail dress is a wonderful blank canvas on which you can imprint your personality and personal sense of style.
