I took the dog to Petsmart today to get a full groom - not my favorite place to take him but they had Saturday appointments so that's where we went. Full groom + nails is $50. They give you the invoice in the grooming section then you pay at the front of the store. In the past there was a place to enter a tip when you were checking out but I didn't see one this time, so I apparently didn't leave a tip. I wasn't really sure what was going on since I expected to be able to leave a tip on my card like I had in the past and I had no cash on hand.
So do you tip at the dog groomer? I normally do 10-20%, but today was 0%. I worry that if I take my pup back there they might somehow treat him worse, am I crazy?

I used to be kris216.
It was an automated screen so the first one it went to was "want to donate to pets in need" and then the next one just said to verify the total, at which point I wasn't sure if there would be future screens. There weren't. Yes I could have asked but since I had added it before I just assumed I would have the opportunity. Oh well, I'll tip well at lunch to compensate

Would you like to buy my condo in Salem?
I worked at Petsmart as a groomer and salon manager for 5 yrs. some people tip, some don't. In my salon it was an added bonus, not something we expected. I've never seen a pPetsmart with a tip line on the credit card slip. We either had the customer give us cash before they went up to pay or left a cash tip at the register for the cashier to bring back. Groomers make 50% commissions. Salon manager, 60%, and the bathers are paid minimum wage. Now that I have my own place, people tend to tip more and more generously. I highly doubt they would treat your dog any differently at all because u didn't tip this time. My best advise is to pick one groomer you like there and request them when u make your appt. It makes the groomer gain a relationship with you and the dog and they tend to work better and harder for a request client. Most groomers average 30+ dogs a week and if you are coming in every 6 weeks but with whatever groomer you randomly get put with, the groomer has no connection between the dog or you. But if you are only going there because it is easy to get in and on weekends then requesting one specific groomer might not be worth it to you, it may be harder to get an appt. with that one groomer.
Sorry for the wall of txt, on my phone and usually just lurk, not post.
Lurker here that use to be a PetSmart groomer.
Last time I checked, you can't add a tip to your card at the register. The best thing to do if you want to tip is to ask for cash back then hand it to the groomer when you pick up your dog. (Or tell whoever gets your dog out to give it to the groomer.)
When I worked there 8 years ago (wow it's been a while!), maybe only about 1/4 of the clients would tip. It was much appreciated even if it was just $1 or 2. Most of us regardless of experience were only making $2-3 over minimum wage and most of the time worked our butts off.
If you have any other questions about grooming let me know!
It has never occurred to me to tip a pet groomer - anywhere. But I suspect I tip at at less places than many MM ladies. Restaurants, hair salon, baggage handlers/bellboys, valet, movers...that's all I can think of.
Thank you for saying this, I was feeling terrible that it never even occurred to me to tip. Signed, newish owner of a short-haired dog who has been to the groomer maybe three times in two years.
See I likely wouldn't tip in those circumstances but our dog goes every 6 weeks and so I feel like I've built that relationship with the groomer and she has built a relationship with our dog so we do try to tip when we can.
I work at Petsmart in the grooming salon and it amazes me how many people don't think about tipping us. Wouldn't you tip your hair dresser, waiter/waitress, person that does your nails, etc. Many people don't think about what we do - we wash your dog, check anal glands, grind/trim dogs nails, do a complete hair cut, bath your dog, dry your dog completely. We do this realizing that your dog could decide to bite us at anytime or scratch us with their nails. I have scars on my arm from being scratched. I've been bit numerous times. My back hurts after lifting overweight dogs onto the grooming table, my arms/wrists hurt after months of repetitive grooming. We do this over and over again because we love dogs and for the most part, love our jobs. We also clean up the occasional poop or pee from your dogs. I would be happy for any kind of tip - something that shows your appreciation. This is especially true for nail walk ins. Most of which are brought in because the owners can't do the nails themselves.
I love my job and wouldn't be doing it if I didn't. I just wish people would realize that we (as groomers/bathers) wish there were a spot on the receipt or touch pad to leave a tip. It's not our fault that corporate hasn't implemented such a service. Think hard about what we do with your dog (s) when you pick them up. We give them our utmost attention and love while they are in our care. Why don't you give us some respect and tip when you pick up.
