Health insurance premiums (family)
If you have health insurance through your employer, what is your premium contribution?
I am considering a new job but just found out my monthly premium will be $1031/month for a family plan. That seems outrageous to me....!!

I pay about $800 amonth for family with Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Seems high but I look at it like, if it's pretax it actually puts you in a lower tax bracket.

I've only had one job that even offered health insurance. My entire premium was covered by the employer, but above my own coverage it was $600/pp per month. I only covered our son and paid $600 for him, but to add my husband it would have been a total of $1200 per month. I had a high salary, it is unusual for small firms in my area to have health insurance at all, and it was really good insurance, so I did not find it outrageous.
Whether or not $1031 per month is outrageous just depends on many variables, including the standards in your industry, your total compensation package, and the type of coverage. In general, $1,031 is not an unreasonable amount of money for health insurance (this is about what we paid per month for good individual health insurance before dropping to crappy coverage to lower our premium). If you are well compensated in regard to salary, then it might not be outrageous to pay that.
Outrageous yes, but in reality - depending on the coverage- it is the norm.
As an employer I have had people telling me that the COBRA price is outrageous and I wasnt even charging the 1 or 2% more that is allowable by law. I was just telling them what the true cost was. They never stopped to realize that my company was paying that exact amount for them all along.
And yes...cobra is definitely more expensive. Too, it seems like, at least in the past, the larger the company, the smaller the premium to the employee. A company I worked for a few years ago was a tiny company (and a rather shady one). If i wanted coverage through them, it would have cost me over $1000 for just me. My husband's premium for just him is more than I would be paying for the top tier plan at my employer to cover my daughter and me. He works for a township with fewer employees than my company.
And speaking of my husband's insurance...when they were looking at different options a few years ago, we went to an informational meeting. At this meeting, we saw a breakdown of how much each employee was using the insurance...office visits, medications, etc. Just a few employees were definitely driving up the cost for everyone else.
We were paying about 250 for AMAZING family coverage at my old job.
Then we were paying 1500 for COBRA for super crappy insurance through DH's old job. I think before he was laid off we were paying like 800 for family.
Now we are paying about 130 a month for an HSA, plus contributing 400 a month to the HSA account to that if we have bills we can pay them tax-free with the HSA.
We are "those people" who use a lot of health care and drive the costs up for everyone. DH has a heart condition and genetic condition. The kids both have a genetic condition. DS has delays. I inherited a cancer gene and need special screening every year. We are actually very healthy day-to-day but we have to see a lot of specialists for check-ups. And once my cancer gene kicks in, and I get colon cancer, I will have hosp. bills in the millions, I am sure. Want to trade?
