Honolulu/Maui recs, not renting car

Yes, a lame Hawaii post. In my defense, the search function has never worked for me.

We're going next year for our 10th anniversary. I've never been. DH went when he was 8. I had thought we would stay 4 nights in Honolulu and that was it. Then people started railing at us for not planning to go to Maui, lol

Important: We are not Beach People. We're planning to spend maybe one afternoon on the beach. We do not want to rent a car. I had thought staying in Waikiki would be best. While not wanting to spend a lot of time ON the beach, we do want a room with spectacular views.

But after reconsidering, maybe we don't want to stay on Waikiki either. So please recommend a nice hotel with a nice beach...that I guess we can hire cabs for as needed to sightsee. DH's boss recommended Turtle Bay on the north side, 50 miles from the airport. Not too sure about that.

Also, really, really need ideas for Maui cause I have no idea where to start. We would only stay there 2 nights. I don't even know which town to stay in. I hear the north side is windy though.

Is there a reason you won't rent a car?  Your options are extremely limited without a car, especially on Maui.  If you aren't beach people and you won't rent a car so that you can get out and explore the island, I can't really give you many recommendations.  On Oahu Waikiki is fine, but it's centered around the beach and shopping.  It's very crowded with tourists--not my cup of tea. I grew up on Oahu and know the island well.  I'd say my favorite areas to stay are Kailua/Lanikai and the North Shore (Turtle Bay area)--both of which will require a car.

  • I also question not renting a car.  If you are not beach people, there is not a lot to do without renting a car. What do you want to do?  Hike?  Historical sites?
  • In Maui we stayed at the four seasons wailea and it was amazing, if your only staying for 2 nights it is such a great spot and the resort itself has great restaurants and a great spa.

They also offer airport pick up and drop off service, and will take you to any local attractions for no extra cost.

  • I'm also confused.  Why don't you want to rent a car?  And how do you expect to get to non-beach activities without one?  Maui is nearly impossible without a car unless you choose to stay at a resort the entire time which is a beach related thing.

It is possible to get to a lot of things on the bus in Oahu, especially from Waikiki (which you don't want to stay in). I did that my first 2 months here, before my car arrived.  But I don't think the bus is the best use of vacation time.

  • What do you plan on doing if you don't hang out on the beach? We aren't beach people but there is no way you could survive either island without a car in that case.

  • Maui is my least favorite island. You should look into Kauai. Waimea Canyon is probably my favorite place on all four islands that we've been to. If you're going to spend 2 nights on another island but are not beach people, I would do Waimea Canyon and the Napali Coast on Kauai.
  • Kauai is nearly impossible without a car.  Trust me, we were there on a holiday weekend when everyone was sold out our first couple days.  Thankfully a friend was happy to drive us around :)

  • I don't mean to sound stupid, but why on earth would you even go to Hawaii if you aren't beach people?   What kinds of things are you looking to do?

I would think you could spend your money a lot better elsewhere.  You can get great views of the ocean in other destinations that wouldn't cost you as much money to get there.

I agree that the bus will take you a lot of places on Oahu, but in Maui a car is a necessity IMO.

I assume that when she said they aren't beach people that they aren't into just hanging out in sand all day. I assume (maybe wrongly) that they would be into activities like snorkeling and other activities that involve DOING something instead of just hanging out on the beach. I find the beachy stuff really boring too.

  • Honestly, I'm not sure there is even a point to going to Maui without a car. Or Kauai if you went that route.

You *could* do Oahu if you just stayed in Waikiki, but thats no fun either.

You need to rent a car.

That makes sense.  I just assumed it meant that they didn't like any beach/water activities at all.  So maybe that's incorrect.

  • If you don't want to rent a car for the entire trip, I might suggest Green Car Hawaii, which is similar to Zip car.

  • We are planning a long weekend in Maui next month and there's no way we'd enjoy ourselves without renting a car. I mean, "Road to Hana" is one of the things to do.

You can stay in Waikiki and get away with not renting a car, my husband's parents did that. But.. your vacation will likely consist of only seeing Waikiki. Which can get old. There's a lot more to Oahu than Waikiki and many tourists fail to realize that.

I'm also interested in your reason for not wanting to rent a car, as it does not add too much of an expense to the trip..even if you just rented one for half the time or something. You can use the bus like Sibil said, but I certainly would not want to spend my vacation on TheBus. Cabs will get expensive SUPER fast.
