For you Navy-affiliated ladies

I'm in charge of making a design for the new ship t-shirts that are going to be sold through the FRG (the old ones were pepto-pink and really hideous). I'm trying to think of cool ideas but wish I had more reference material of what other ship's t-shirts look like!

Have you seen any notable designs/ideas/whatever on your H's ship merch?

I kind of want to do a Sailor Jerry style design but don't know how well that would go over with the more conservative ladies on the board.

Re: For you Navy-affiliated ladies

  • The enlisted spouse club for my H's unit has a SKIN type girl straddling an M16. They are also hot pink. I kid you not. Sailor Jerry shirt sounds like an improvement.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • DH has never been on a ship so all their shirts have been battalion logos but, I really like the Sailor Jerry inspired idea.

  • For deployment they had shirts made that had Rosie the Riveter and the saying "Staying Strong While He's Gone". I was not a fan.

The other shirts I've seen just have the squadron logo. Although apparently a few years ago the wives had shirts that said "(Squadron Name) Wives" in rhinestones.

I think the Sailor Jerry idea is a good one, and if you're worried about the conservative ladies maybe you can come up with a second idea.

  • Ours have had a small logo on the chest with a pic of the ship in front of a flag with the hull number.  Then the back just has writing and says something about "proud Navy family."

I think Sailor Jerry would be cute.  I'm assuming you have to run the ideas by the other members of the board anyways right?  Can you do one like that as well as another more conservative one?  Then gauge their response since they have been part of the board longer (I'm assuming), or you can just order both.

  • Ours are hideous as well. We had very few design submitted. The actual shirts are either gray or white. For the record they originally wanted to do either baby pink or magenta. I think that we were worried the design wouldn't turn out well on those colors.

I really like the front. The dolphin symbol was easy to pick because it's actually a pin that the guys all have to qualify for. I don't know if surface ships use the surface warfare pin the same way or not.

The back......ehm. We have a picture of a sub moving through the water with a picture of Rosie the Riveter super-imposed over it and the words "Behind every sailor is a strong woman. USS Nest" The shirts were only very recently made but it won't be PC anymore the first time a sailor shows up to the boat with a male significant other. Plus some people are buying these shirts to give to other family members.

Looking back it would have been better to have the picture of the sub and the name of our group.  Alternatively we could also have used an imprint of the boat's crest but then it would have looked a wee bit too much like stuff that the ship's store sells.

  • I like the Sailor Jerry idea. FWIW, the swallows you see often in Sailor Jerry style tattoos were adopted by sailors because that was often the first thing they would see when they got close to land, and so it became associated with coming home safely.

So maybe something with swallows? Even the conservative ladies couldn't argue with that theme, I think.

I think that's a great idea! You're an MC spouse, right? Any chance your H wants to lat move to my husband's MOS so his spouse's club can get their shirts redesigned by you?

  • The shirts we just did are our take on the "Keep Calm" shirts.  They are OD green with black writing.  We don't really do a lot of pink around here.  They sell a few pink shirts at the S5 shop, but they aren't great sellers.  Our FRG caught on to that really fast.  We have figured out that light blues and yellows sell pretty well.

If you like the "Keep Calm" idea, you could do something like "Keep Calm and Sail on" or any other terms that are common for that unit.

We like to keep our shirts really simple.  We normally sell out.  Last years shirts were just a simple black shirt with OD green letters that spelled out the unit number.  Example (not real unit): four / twenty-first.

We also like shirts where only people who are in the know know what the shirt means.

  • I want to weep at nearly every example.  They're almost as bad as abu diaper bags.

I had to google sailor jerry.  Is that a universally known thing in the navy world?

  • Sibil, I knew about Sailor Jerry from rum or tattoos more than the Navy lol.
