Workouts while studying?

I was going to the gym 5-6 days a week, mostly running, was training for a half and my knee started hurting. So stopped that, and focused on stregth training and cross training. The I started up nursing school, while working ft, and can barely find time to shower even, let alone go to the gym! Haven't been there in two months- going insane!!!

I want to get a few pieces for at home exercises, things I can even do while studying. I was thinking some resistance bands, a couple of weights (shake weigth even? haha) and dh was going to get a stationary bike. Said bike he's been talkign about for 4 weeks and I still haven't seen it...

Any tips or things that can help me? I should probablly incorporate a little yoga in my breaks too, so stressed!

Re: Workouts while studying?

  • My home "gym" is small, but includes:
    - treadmill
    - Bosu ball
    - stability ball
    - weights (2 15lbs, 2 10lbs, 2 8lbs)
    - pull up bar (rarely used though, since I presently struggle with - thanks p90x dude - doing an unassisted pull up)
    - DVDs (Jillian Michaels, p90x, ChaLean, etc.)

All of this stuff is enough to give me a decent workout on the days I can't get to the gym.

  • I am in school and have 2 LOs. I find that if I don't schedule my workouts (like I would any other appointment), they don't happen. Maybe this could work for you?

I usually go to the gym, but I keep DVDs on hand for when I can't make it. Good luck!

  • We have a treadmill and weigh bench, but no place to set them up right now.  Can't wait to finish our renovation, which includes a small exercise room!

For home workouts, I rely on hand weights, Netflix, and a bunch of DVDs.  I also do a lot of no-equipment cardio circuits...60 seconds of some activity (jump rope, burpees, skaters, jumping jacks, etc.) followed by a 30-60 second rest and repeat for a totoal of 30-45 minutes. During the week I also get up an hour early to meet friends in the neighborhood and we walk about 2.5 miles before everyone goes back to get ready for their day.

My MIL has a stationary bike I use at her house, and I did read while on it, but it really wasn't that comfortable for me.  I don't know that I'd want to study while doing it...I'd feel like both the studying and the working out were getting less than my full effort.

  •       I agree that you need to schedule it into your routine or it just does not happen. I am in graduate school for nursing with two small kids and it just helps me to balance the insanity. I work between two and three days a week and that may change my plans. I go to the gym most of the time, but we have an eliptical at home and I have some free weights. If I am way bogged down with school stuff then I spend 10-15 min on  machine, do a few weights and then return to school work. I also take stuff I need to read to the gym when I am running. Exercise will definately help with nursing school. I thankfully was training for a half in the fall when everything was going crazy or I would have just said forget the MSN. Good luck to you!!!

  • I'm also a student. I think the recs you have for a home gym are really good so I have nothing to add there. Recording my lectures in class has really been helpful. I usually listen to them on my runs and also listen to them in the car when I'm driving back and forth to school.

Hope that helps! Good luck for school.

  • Do you have a bike now? A stationary trainer would be much cheaper, and you can ride your own bike. I use mine all the time in the winter or when the weather is bad. See my bio for trainer advice.
  • Schedulingthe gym would be a great idea.... but doesn't work right now, it's 30 minutes away, I used to to just go before work, but now I'm all over, so everything had changed for me. I neeed to just quit my gym  membership and build my "home gym"
