Need some help with eye makeup. I've never worn it before.

The only makeup I wear is blush and lip gloss. Sometimes I wonder if I should wear eye makeup to make my eyes appear a little brighter.

I have pretty large (blue) eyes, without much definition to them (meaning, my eyelids, brow bone etc all seem to be about flush with one another), and I wear glasses. Here's a picture, and you can kinda see that my eyelid area isn't very well defined.

Should I bother with eye makeup? If so, what's something easy and somewhat inexpensive that I can do? How do I wear it to work? What about when going out? What kind of colors do I use? What brands?

I've never worn eye makeup before so any tips are appreciated.

Re: Need some help with eye makeup. I've never worn it before.

  • I think eye makeup would really make your eyes stand out, even through your glasses.

I'd start by going to Sephora and have them do some different looks with different brands to see what kind you like for you (not all brands work well on everyone).

Also, another way to experiment is to buy inexpensive makeup to see what colors work then buy better makeup as you know what works.

Mascara would be great as well. They make so many different kinds (length, fullness, etc). depending on the look you want.

    Good luck and have fun!

  • I agree about going somewhere and showing you different looks. Or even just wandering around a makeup store and picking up a few things to try. My advice is to pick what looks fun and try it out. You may end up looking like a hooker clown the first couple of times you try, but it all washes off. :oD

I think the best/basic thing to pick up would be a make-up palette that is supposed to enhance your eye color. It'll come in 3 shades (usually) with instructions on how to apply. I'd also pick up some mascara. After that you can branch out.

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • Watch some youtube videos and look at pictures on pinterest to get some ideas of how to wear it.  TiffanyD has some great blog posts and youtube videos that really help.  I just started wearing makeup and I've learned a lot from her videos.

If you have oily skin I would get a eyeshadow primer to put on before putting on your makeup. I tried the ELF primer, but it didn't work well enough for me.  Right now I'm using the Urban Decay primer potion and I like it a lot. I'd like to try the Two Faced one next.  I really like the maybelline color tattoo cream eyeshadows and they were very helpful for me to learn with.  The Bad to the Bronze is a great color.  Covergirl lash blast is a good inexpensive mascara.

  • Ditto looking on Pinterest and YouTube. It is a lot of fun to try out new "looks." I've also had makeup sales people do my makeup two different times and it really helped with easy "everyday" makeup ideas. I think once you have the basics down it is a lot of fun to play around with new ideas and techniques.

  • You have really nice eyes and would look fantastic with eye makeup!!  If you are wanting to keep it simple, I would do a cream shadow and then mascara.  I am in LOVE with Maybelline Color Tattoo cream shadows, which are cheap, easy to apply, and so pretty.  You can pick them up at Target, and they are also on sale right now on drugstore.com if you prefer to order online.

The way I use them is dab it on using my finger.  I take the color Too Cool (a shimmery white) and apply from the crease of my eye about 3/4 of the way up to my brow.  Then I take one of the other colors and apply with my finger pretty heavily on the lid, and then I dab it more lightly over the crease of my eye to blend it with the white.  When I use these it's typically because I'm in a hurry, so I don't do eye liner, and I just slap on some mascara.  It seriously takes about two minutes at most.  These come in really pretty colors and I think a few of these and a tube of mascara would be plenty for a simple and easy eye makeup routine.

Here is a link to a blog where the girl swatches the colors on her arm.  http://www.beautyjunkiesunite.com/WP/2011/12/27/maybelline-eyestudio-color-tattoo-24-hour-cream-gel-eyeshadows-reviews-swatches-photos-dupes/

For an inexpensive mascara, Maybelline Full n Soft is really good and also inexpensive.

This was a horrible hair day, so please ignore that, but here I used Too Cool above the crease, Edgy Emerald on the lid, and then just put on mascara.

Here all I did was use Too Cool all over and then used mascara - this was very, very quick (and you can see I didn't blend it really well, but really no one would notice unless you close your eyes and take a close up picture :)

If you aren't sure about the Maybelline Color Tatoo shadows, another product I like are the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils.  They come in tons of colors, and you can just apply the pencil directly on your lid, and then use your finger to blend it all over.

Of course there are a million different products and different looks, but these are the products I like that are inexpensive and easy to use!

Please post again and let us know what you ended up trying!

  • I also wanted to add that another good cream shadow that is easy to quickly apply with your finger is Stila's Smudge Pots.  The color Kitten is soooo pretty, and can be worn alone or with other colors.  It's a nice, light, neutral color that is great to brighten the eyes without a heavy makeup look.  They have several very pretty colors.  MAC also has cream shadows called Paint Pots, but I've never looked at these and know little about them.
  • A nice light brown, gold, or copper wash of color on your lid would look very nice. I wouldn't try to start with two or three colors of eyeshadows. Perhaps just try adding one color on your lid with some mascara to start. Get used to wearing that for a little while and branch out when you feel more comfortable.

Cheap brands to start - Wet N Wild, Cover Girl, NYX

  • I think shadow, liner and mascara would make your eyes pop.

I would check out some youtube tutorials from MakeupByTiffanyD. AllThatGlitters21 and MakeupByAlli have a few cute looks as well.
