C25K- How did you mentally start this program?

I know this program is discussed and rated positively on this board. I want to start, but I keep having mental roadblocks about it.

Pros: Love how you can just run out your door and run (instead of driving to the gym based on their operating hours), being outdoors/change of scenery

Cons: I hate running, but want to learn to like doing so since it's flexible

I've got my ipod, workout clothes (I do work out at the gym but get so bored on the treadmill/bike/elliptical), but I just need that last trigger to get my body out there and try...

  • I haaaaated running, but I gave the program a try by telling myself that the commitment to the program was relatively minimal (3x a week for a limited time) and that if I gave it that good try and still hated it/didn't get any results then at least I could tell myself I made a good effort.

    The feeling of running that first mile was incredible - I was so proud.  Then 1 turned into 3 and then 5, 10 and finally 13.  Now I'm looking forward to 15 and 20.

  • Open the door and step out and run.  The more you think about it, the more you will psych yourself out.  Just grab your stuff and go.  Once you are outside you feel lame for turning around and going back in.
  • 20 minutes goes by pretty quickly when you're out and about, so if you don't enjoy it, it's not a lot of time lost.

    Sometimes when I don't want to do something I'll tell myself, "I'll do it for 5 minutes and if I still hate it then I'll stop."  Usually I finish whatever it was that I didn't want to do. It's just getting started that's the hard part.  ;)

  • I never ever ever in my entire life thought I could or would ever want to run. When I was the most out of shape, I started on the elliptical. Then I started doing some crossfit-types of workouts with some friends from work. Sometimes we would run a lap in between sets of sit ups and stuff. My friend who was running the workouts challenged us to go do 5k of something (run, bike, walk, row, etc) over a weekend. I didn't really know what to do, but a friend offered to go with me and we did a run/walk and I made it through! I figured if I could do that, then I was ready for C25K.

     

    I'll be honest, it was hard. Often I couldn't get through the running segments on day 1 or day 2 (doing the workouts every other day), but by day 3 I could do it! My calves would get sooooo sore and for the first 6 months or so I had to stop and stretch them often. Now I absolutely love it! I'm not a big racer and don't run super long runs, but I ran 3 miles this morning and went on a bike ride this afternoon and I ran 5 miles Friday and I feel great!

     Btw I disagree with the advice to just go out and run. Maybe some people can do that without working up to it, but I wouldn't have been able to and would have felt like a total loser. C25K gets you there slowly and safely. :)

  • I got a free app on my phone that tells me what to do while listening to my own music. Love it! I say just get out & do it! No excuses. You said you work out at the gym, so its not like you're truly starting from the couch like me!

  • I tried, and quite three times before I actually started it for good.

    I know you don't have to be in shape to try, but I had been going to the gym for a few months, working with a trainer and doing different cardio. So when I started it again a month ago, that first week was "easier" and it made a difference.

    You misunderstood me.  I answered how I started C25K.  I just went outside and did it.    :-)

  • I thougth I hated running too but it's not nearly as bad as it was in HS gym class.  I needed a way to burn some calories and get rid of any anger, frustration, stress, etc, that I have on any particular day.  Maybe find something to make it extra enjoyable.  I like to listen to audiobooks (my brain focuses on the book instead of wondering when in the heck I'll be finished).  I also downloaded a bunch of loud, angry, or curse-filled songs for the days when I'm extra crabby.  What can I say, it makes me feel better!  Also, I've always wanted to go to the Flying Pig and dress up in pig ears & wings.  We're way too busy this year but I am so going to register for the 5K next year!

  • Also, for me running a 5K, heck, even 5 minutes, will enable me to say "f you" to the memory of myself as a pudgy, awkward teen.  Plus I hope running will make me feel like I'm in my 20s again.  I've been feeling my age lately (in my head at least) and I don't want to turn into an old fuddy-duddy! 

    I have the app (not sure which one, the most popular in the app store on itunes) and I've looked at a few other C25K plans.  I don't think I would have tried running w/out a plan to look at.
