Pain during sex? Possibly from endometriosis?

Hi, I'm new here. A long time lurker of a lot of the boards, since they give good advice, though. First off, I have endometriosis. I'm on the more severe side of the scale, since I have had it since I started having periods at fifteen and experienced pain bad enough I passed out from it. I am told there is a good chance I have a TON of scarring, which makes getting pregnant and staying pregnant hard, but it also makes my periods and any bloating I have hurt like crazy, on top of the "normal" endo pain. Now, my question is, could the endometriosis cause pain during sex? It is probably TMI, but when boyfriend and I have sex, it is a bit like ten thousand little tears are happening inside my vagina. Which, you would think, might be stretching. It isn't though. I am, according to my boyfriend, " not tight... not loose, but you don't seem any tighter than normal." I had him check down there, and he says my vagina looks fine. Nothing irritating it, no redness, no swelling, nothing. It makes sex unbearable for the first few minutes, normally, and then you kind of just... get used to it? I suppose it is all those lovely hormones that make me "ignore" the pain. However, last night, we tried and I almost threw up it hurt so bad. I added more lube and lotion, to see if that would help, and it did not. It just sort of stung. Both he and I have been tested multiple times, and well, if he had an STD, I'd know it by now.

Any thoughts?

  • Congratulations!!! I'm so happy for you! I'm glad it isn't just me that experiences this. My GYN said that this is somewhat normal and it depends on the person, but I'd never had a lot of pain until last night...
  • thanks!! were excited!! Give it another go! sometimes during different times in the month your body is changing that could have been an effect on the pain last night! closer to my time of the month sex was more painful a few days before my period and a few days after. i just avoided sex those few days

  • I'm actually on BC right now, a low constant dose one. It helps with the pain :) I'm actually "supposed" to be ovulation right now. Maybe my body still it going through some changes because of it?
  • Vaginal pain could be some  other cause -- interstititial cystitis or vaginisimus --- or if you are using a spermicide, maybe a spermicide allergy. If you're using a condom, maybe you're sensitifve to the materials in the condom; if you're using a vaginal ring, maybe it's a sensitivity to that, also.

Hard to tell; bounce this one of your gyn. Good luck.

    You're not tight?

Pish....he's kind of insensitive to say that --- I'll bet he is comparing a vagina to a fist. And no way a vagina can be as tight as a fist.
  • Nah, I don't think it was meant to be insulting, I think he was just saying I wasn't super tight or anything that might indicate tearing :)
  • I'm not a regular on this board, but I also have stage 4 endo and can speak to your experience:.

I reached a point where sex was very, very painful. I had always just dealt with the other symptoms (pain, bloating, constant bleeding - like, every day for over a year) But then the painful sex started (exactly the way you described it), and it started affecting my marriage, so I went back to my doctor and asked for something else (I'd tried every BCP imaginable).... she put me on Mirena. I got it last April, and things improved. I actually had to give up soy, wheat, and cheese (some women with Endo can control it through diet), but the combination of the Mirena and avoiding those foods has fixed everything.

Good luck! But in short - yes, endo can cause painful sex.

I had to give up food in my diet as well! It helped alot!! I also was told by my doctor that once you get pregnant it subsides the endo some.( Not saying get pregnant) lol I just was told when i was pregnant that i would not have as many issues and it would be easier for me to get pregnant again once i got pregnant the first time!

  • Thank you for all of the information! I wish there was something I could do about this, other than most visits to my gyno and more treatments...
