Salt tablets for long runs/races?

Have anyone ever used salt tablets regularly? My legs were feeling sore during an 18 miler a couple weeks ago and a woman in my running group gave me some halfway though. I felt great the rest of the run. I ran my 20 today and my legs just never felt good. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to train with salt before my marathon in a month...

Re: Salt tablets for long runs/races?

  • I haven't... I find that Gatorade seems to take care of any electrolyte shortages I experience during long runs.

A girl I know who does ultramarathons drinks pickle juice. I've never tried that, but I can see how it would sound tasty when you're really craving salt during/after a really long run!

  • I've brought along those single serve salt packets (from take out places) and I feel a notable difference, especially on hot days. I usually don't carry a water bottle/ gatorade and run with my group that sets out water or plan routes near parks with water fountains, so these are easy to carry and follow with a swig of water.

  • I eat pretzels and I think they help.

  • Thinking back to Kinesiology 101.... I THINK that the elements that make up an electrolyte are sodium and potassium, so you might be better off with something that has both like Gatorade.

  • I've used Endurolytes (from Hammer Nutrition).  I've only used them during Ironman, in conjunction with Gatorade Endurance, and they helped immensely.  They were especialy helpful during two 112-mile training rides in 90-degree weather!
  • You can also use salt packets (like from a restaurant) or sometimes I fill a baggie with a little salt and then lick my finger to get the salt in my mouth. Works just as good.
  • The NYC marathon "runner tips" last year said bring salt packets for the race....take one before the start, and then a couple during the race.  i never trained with salt, so didnt feel comfortable doing this, but apparently it is a popular routine and i plan on trying it for my long runs this summer to see if it helps!
