Back from Paris and London

Our flight just arrived this afternoon - I'm a bit delirious with fatigue at the moment, but just wanted to say thanks to everyone who gave me advice prior to the trip! My random thoughts/ramblings (in no particular order) are as follows:

Paris

We booked a car to pick us up from CDG airport rather than haggle with the RER train.  We used inter shuttle (just Google "inter shuttle Paris") and the driver met us right at the door with a sign, which was a relief after our very long flight! We stayed at the Hotel Lutetia on the left bank.  It was $$$ but I would highly recommend - right by great shopping, restaurants, and a metro stop.

The "language barrier" in Paris was not a big deal at all.  I did learn a bit of French before I went, but most people I spoke to immediately recognized that we were American, and would kindly offer "Anglais"? Many restaurants also had menus in both French and English. I know the French have a reputation as being rude or arrogant but we didn't encounter anyone like that! I thought the people in Paris were lovely.

We did a dinner cruise on the Seine which was amazing.  The company we used was Bateaux Parisiens but there are many others that offer dinner cruises.

London

The London part of our trip ended up being not as much fun as I thought. Part of the problem was that it was very cold (unseasonably so) and rained all day, every day. Many of the things I wanted to do (bike tour, Borough Market, walk in the parks, etc.) we didn't do because we were freezing and soaked. We were in London 4.5 days, but I would have been fine leaving after 2.  I just didn't think there was as much to do in London as in Paris, but again, the weather didn't help.

Highlights were seeing the changing of the guard (it was actually sunny for like a half-hour that day), having afternoon tea in the National Gallery cafe (get a cream tea - the clotted cream is yummy!) and doing the London Walks Jack the Ripper Tour. We also tried to hit up the big sites like Westminster Abbey and Tower of London during lunch hour, when it seemed less crowded.

What else... Rick Steves' books were a huge help.  Let me know if anyone has any questions!
